Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 65-66 Tafseer (English)
The Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 65-66 Tafseer explains an important incident from the history of Bani Israel.
During the time of Prophet Dawood (AS), there was a town called Aylah near the Red Sea. Many of its people earned their livelihood by catching fish and selling them in distant places.
Allah had forbidden them from fishing on Saturday (the Sabbath). On the other six days, fishing was allowed.
The Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 65-66 Tafseer teaches several important lessons for every Muslim.
As a test from Allah, fish appeared in great numbers on Saturdays but became scarce on the remaining days.
Instead of obeying Allah, some people devised a trick. They dug ponds beside the sea. On Saturday, fish entered these ponds with the flowing water. They then blocked the water, trapping the fish. On the following days, they caught and sold them, claiming that they were not fishing on Saturday.
Although they technically avoided catching fish on Saturday, they deliberately violated the spirit of Allah’s command through deception.
Because of this open disobedience, Allah punished them by transforming them into disgraced apes. According to many scholars, some elderly people were also transformed into swine. They remained alive for only three days and then died. The monkeys and pigs that exist today are not descendants of those people; they are separate creations of Allah.
The Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 65-66 Tafseer teaches that Allah made this incident an everlasting lesson for future generations so that believers avoid playing tricks with His commands.
Lessons from Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 65-66 Tafseer
- Allah’s commands should be obeyed sincerely.
- Deceiving the Shariah is a serious sin.
- Clever tricks cannot hide disobedience from Allah.
- Every Muslim should fear Allah in both actions and intentions.
- The stories of previous nations are lessons for all believers.
Islamic Ruling About Legal Tricks (Hilah)
Islam does not permit tricks that are used to make something prohibited appear lawful.
However, permissible legal solutions that help Muslims obey Allah are allowed.
For example, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that instead of exchanging one kilogram of high-quality dates for two kilograms of lower-quality dates (which falls under Riba), a person should first sell the lower-quality dates for money and then use that money to buy the better dates.
This method avoids interest and remains within the limits of Islamic law.
Therefore, legal methods that support obedience are permissible, while tricks that cancel Allah’s commands are forbidden.
To understand the complete context of these verses, we also recommend reading Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 63-64 Tafseer, which explains the preceding incident of Bani Israel in detail.
