Surah Baqarah Ayat 186 – Arabic Text and Translation
English Translation:
“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that they may be rightly guided.”

Surah Baqarah Ayat 186 Tafseer According to Ibn Kathir
According to the explanation mentioned in the supplied Tafseer Ibn Kathir text, a Bedouin once came to a gathering of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and asked whether Allah was near so that people could speak to Him quietly, or far away so that they needed to call Him loudly. The Prophet ﷺ remained silent, and this verse was revealed to explain that Allah is near and responds to the supplication of His servants.
Allah hears His servants whether they call upon Him softly or loudly. Believers do not need to raise their voices excessively when making dua, because Allah is All-Hearing and All-Seeing.
A similar lesson is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari from Abu Musa al-Ash’ari During a journey with the Prophet ﷺ, the Companions would raise their voices saying “Allahu Akbar” while climbing hills or descending into valleys. The Prophet ﷺ told them not to overburden themselves, reminding them that they were calling upon One who hears and sees everything.
This teaching reminds Muslims that Allah knows every prayer, every thought, and every need. He hears the supplication of all His creation, regardless of their languages or circumstances.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 186 Tafseer – The Proper Way to Make Dua
The supplied explanation emphasizes that Muslims should generally call upon Allah with humility and a gentle voice. The Quran teaches believers to supplicate to their Lord humbly and privately.
However, there are occasions when raising the voice is prescribed, such as the Adhan, Iqamah, Takbir, and Takbirat al-Tashriq, according to their respective rulings.
Muslims should continue making dua in every situation, whether they are experiencing happiness, hardship, illness, or uncertainty. Remembering Allah during times of ease helps a believer turn to Him sincerely during times of difficulty.
Three Important Conditions for the Acceptance of Dua
1. Earn Lawful Provision
A Muslim should seek halal earnings and avoid unlawful sources of income and food. Lawful provision is an important matter in the teachings concerning the acceptance of supplications.
2. Make Dua with Sincerity and Attention
A person should turn to Allah with a sincere heart, humility, and full attention. The supplied explanation mentions that Allah does not accept the supplication of a heedless and inattentive heart.
3. Do Not Become Impatient
A believer should not become impatient and say that their prayers are not being answered. Instead, they should continue making dua, maintain hope in Allah’s mercy, and trust His wisdom and timing.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 186 Tafseer – Three Ways Dua May Be Answered
The supplied explanation describes three possible forms of the acceptance of dua:
- Receiving what was requested: Allah may grant the person the very thing they asked for.
- Receiving something better: Allah may grant something better or more beneficial than what the person requested.
- Reward in the Hereafter: The reward of the supplication may be preserved for the Hereafter.
The explanation also describes how a believer may wish in the Hereafter that none of their supplications had been granted in this world, because of the great reward they see preserved for them.
This teaches Muslims not to judge every dua only by whether they immediately receive what they requested. They should continue praying and place their trust in Allah.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 186 Tafseer – Respond to Allah’s Commands
The verse concludes by instructing believers to respond to Allah’s commands and believe in Him so that they may attain guidance.
Faith is not limited to words; it also involves obedience, sincere worship, good conduct, and following the guidance of the Quran and Sunnah. By following Allah’s commands and maintaining faith, believers seek the straight path and hope for success in the Hereafter.
