Translation of Surah Baqarah Ayat 183-184
O believers! Fasting has been prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa (piety).
[Fasting is prescribed for] a fixed number of days. But whoever among you is ill or on a journey must make up the same number of days later. And for those who are unable to fast, there is a compensation: feeding a needy person. Whoever voluntarily does a good deed, it is better for him. And fasting is better for you, if only you knew.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 183-184 Tafseer in English
In these verses, Allah Almighty explains the obligation of fasting. Fasting has been prescribed for the believers, just as it was prescribed for the people who came before them. Fasting was made obligatory in Madinah in the second year after Hijrah (2 AH).
The wisdom behind this command is that Allah Almighty wants believers to develop Taqwa. Fasting helps a person develop Taqwa because it restrains physical desires and reduces the influence of worldly and sensual urges. It also helps a person stay away from sinful thoughts and actions.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) explained in a Hadith that fasting is a shield against the Fire, as long as a person does not destroy that protection through sinful behavior.
According to a narration mentioned in Jami’ al-Tirmidhi, Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the deeds that most commonly lead people into Hell. He mentioned the mouth and the private parts. Fasting helps a person control these two areas and avoid the sins associated with them.

Surah Baqarah Ayat 184 Tafseer: The Number of Fasting Days
Allah Almighty explains that fasting is prescribed for a fixed number of days, namely 29 or 30 days. These are the days of the month of Ramadan.
A person who is ill or travelling may postpone fasting and make up the missed days later. The illness referred to here is an illness in which fasting may cause harm, as determined by a qualified medical professional.
According to the explanation provided in this Tafseer, the medical professional should be Muslim, personally observant of Salah and fasting, and experienced in their field. These are the three conditions stated in the original explanation for accepting the professional’s advice.
A traveller, according to the distance stated in this Tafseer, is someone who travels at least 48 miles away from their city.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 183-184 Tafseer: Fidyah for Those Unable to Fast
These verses also mention Fidyah for those who are unable to fast. The original Tafseer explains this ruling in relation to people who are extremely old and cannot bear fasting.
Fidyah means providing food for a needy person or giving an amount of charity equivalent to feeding a needy person two filling meals.
Whoever voluntarily gives more in charity performs an additional good deed, and it is better for that person.
The Tafseer also explains that when an ill person or traveller is able to fast, fasting instead of giving Fidyah is better for them. The missed fasts should be made up on other days where applicable.
