Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127 Translation and Tafseer
Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127 Translation and Tafseer explains the prayer of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), the blessings of Makkah, the provision granted to its people, and the rebuilding of Baytullah by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS). These verses contain important lessons about faith, peace, provision, obedience to Allah, and sincere prayer.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127 Translation
And when Ibrahim said, “My Lord, make this city peaceful and provide its people with fruits, those among them who believe in Allah and the Last Day.” Allah said, “And whoever disbelieves, I will grant him enjoyment for a little while, then I will force him toward the punishment of the Fire, and it is an evil destination.”
And when Ibrahim and Ismail were raising the foundations of the House, they said, “Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
The Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127 Translation highlights the prayer of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) for the peace and prosperity of Makkah and his supplication that Allah accept the service of building the Baytullah.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127 Tafseer
The books of Tafseer mention that when Prophet Ibrahim (AS), by the command of Allah Almighty, brought his wife Hajar (AS) and his son Ismail (AS) to Makkah, there was a tree in front of the place where the Kaaba stands today. He left them there and placed a water-skin containing water and some dates with them.
When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) began to return, Hajar (AS) asked him, “Who are you leaving us here with?” Prophet Ibrahim (AS) did not answer her. Then Hajar (AS) asked, “Has Allah commanded you to do this?” Prophet Ibrahim (AS) replied, “Yes, Allah has commanded me to do so.” Hajar (AS) then said, “Then Allah will not let us be lost.”
When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) went far away and his wife and child were no longer visible to him, he turned towards Makkah and prayed that Allah make this place a peaceful city and provide its people with fruits.
The prayer of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) shows that one of the greatest qualities of a city is peace and security, so that its inhabitants have no fear of theft, robbery, or other dangers. Another important quality is a sound economy and the availability of the necessities of life.
The acceptance of this prayer became apparent when the water and dates that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) had left with Hajar (AS) and Ismail (AS) were finished. Prophet Ismail (AS) became extremely hungry and thirsty and began rubbing his heels against the ground. His mother, Hajar (AS), became worried and began running from one place to another.
She would climb Mount Safa so that she could look far into the distance to see whether there was any sign of water. When she could no longer see her child, she would descend and go towards Mount Marwah.
Seeing the distress of Hajar (AS) and the suffering of Ismail (AS), Allah Almighty caused a spring to emerge from the ground where Ismail (AS) was rubbing his heels.
When the tribe of Jurhum passed by and saw that there was a source of water there, they asked permission to settle in the area. Hajar (AS) allowed them to stay, and many people from the tribe of Jurhum settled there.
It is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari that Prophet Ismail (AS) learned the Arabic language from them. Before that, he spoke the Kurdish language of Iraq or another language. When Prophet Ismail (AS) grew up, he married within this tribe, and Makkah gradually became a populated and flourishing city.
Then, when Prophet Ibrahim (AS), with the help of Prophet Ismail (AS), built the Kaaba, people began coming there from distant places. Some came for worship, while others came for trade. They brought goods and necessities with them to sell and earn profit. In this way, the necessities of life became easily available there.
The Prayer for Provision in Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127
In the next part of the verse, it is mentioned that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) made the prayer for provision specifically for those who believed. A question arises: Why did Prophet Ibrahim (AS) pray for provision only for the believers and not for the disbelievers?
The answer is that in the previous verse, Allah Almighty told Prophet Ibrahim (AS), “I will make you a leader and an Imam for the people.” Prophet Ibrahim (AS) also prayed that this position of leadership be granted to his descendants. Allah Almighty replied that those among his descendants who were disbelievers would not receive this position of leadership.
For more details about the previous verse and the Imamate of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), read our Surah Baqarah Ayat 124 Translation and Tafseer.
From this, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) understood that perhaps provision would also be restricted to believers. Allah Almighty clarified that He would provide for the disbelievers as well, because He is the Provider for all people. Then, in the Hereafter, He would enter the disbelievers into the punishment of the Fire.
This part of the Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127 Translation and Tafseer teaches that worldly provision is not limited only to believers. Allah provides for people according to His wisdom, while the Hereafter is the place where people will receive the final consequences of their faith and deeds.
Rebuilding the Baytullah
The next verse mentions that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS) were raising the foundations of the House. The verse does not simply say that Ibrahim and Ismail were building the structure of the Kaaba; rather, it says that they were raising its foundations. From this, it is understood that the foundations of the Kaaba already existed.
The commentators mention that Prophet Adam (AS) was the first to build the Baytullah. This structure remained until the time of Prophet Nuh (AS), and then it was destroyed during the Flood of Nuh. From the time of the Flood of Nuh until the time of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), the Baytullah remained in this condition.
Then, by the command of Allah, Prophet Ibrahim (AS), together with Prophet Ismail (AS), rebuilt the Kaaba upon those foundations.
The Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127 Tafseer therefore highlights the great service of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS) in rebuilding the House of Allah.
Dua of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail
When the two Prophets completed the construction of the Baytullah, they prayed to Allah Almighty:
“Our Lord, accept this service from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing and the All-Knowing.”
Allah knows the condition of the hearts and knows the intentions behind every deed.
This teaches us an important lesson: even after performing a great act of worship or service, a believer should ask Allah to accept it. The acceptance of deeds ultimately depends upon Allah Almighty.
It is mentioned in some narrations that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) began the construction of the Baytullah on the first of Dhul-Qadah and completed it on the 25th of Dhul-Qadah.
Importance of Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127
The Surah Baqarah Ayat 126-127 Translation and Tafseer provides important lessons about the special status of Makkah and Baytullah. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) prayed for peace and provision for the people of the city.
These verses also show the importance of sincere supplication. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) asked Allah to make Makkah a peaceful city and to provide its people with fruits.
The story of Hajar (AS) and Ismail (AS) also reminds believers of patience, trust in Allah, and reliance upon Him during difficult circumstances.
The rebuilding of the Kaaba by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS) further demonstrates the importance of obedience and service for the sake of Allah.
