Surah Baqarah 178 English Translation
O you who believe! Qisas (legal retribution) is prescribed for you concerning those who are killed: a free person for a free person, a slave for a slave, and a woman for a woman. But if anything is forgiven to someone by his brother, then the follow-up should be according to what is reasonable, and payment should be made with kindness. This is a concession and mercy from your Lord. Whoever transgresses after that will have a painful punishment. And in Qisas there is life for you, O people of understanding, so that you may become mindful of Allah.Surah Baqarah 178 Tafseer explains the importance of Qisas, forgiveness, and justice in Islam.
Surah Baqarah 178 Tafseer
The previous verse described righteousness and mentioned several aspects of good deeds. It then described the people who have Taqwa (consciousness of Allah). In this verse, Allah Almighty explains rulings related to Taqwa, including Qisas, forgiveness, and the payment of blood money.
Surah Baqarah 178 Tafseer: The Ruling of Qisas
Surah Baqarah Ayat 178 Tafseer explains the principle of justice in cases of killing. Qisas refers to proportionate legal retribution. The verse mentions a free person for a free person, a slave for a slave, and a woman for a woman.
Surah Baqarah 178 Tafseer highlights the protection of human life and the importance of fair settlements.
This guidance also rejects the unjust practices of some tribes during the period of ignorance. Certain tribes considered themselves superior to others and claimed that if one of their people was killed, they would kill two people in return. Similarly, they claimed that if one of their slaves was killed, they would kill a free person from the opposing tribe. The verse teaches against such excessive and unjust retaliation.
Three Types of Killing
The commentators describe three categories of killing:
1. Intentional Killing (Qatl-e-Amd)
This refers to deliberately killing a person with an instrument commonly used to kill, such as a pistol, dagger, or sword.
2. Quasi-Intentional Killing (Shibh-e-Amd)
This refers to deliberately striking someone with an object not ordinarily used to kill, such as a stick, when the person subsequently dies.
3. Accidental Killing (Qatl-e-Khata)
This refers to killing someone unintentionally. For example, a person may be hunting when another person suddenly appears and is accidentally struck by a bullet or arrow.
According to the explanation provided in this tafseer, Qisas applies to intentional killing, while blood money, known as Diyat, is paid in the other two categories. The amounts mentioned in the supplied tafseer are one hundred camels, ten thousand dirhams, or one thousand dinars, depending on the form of payment.
These figures are presented as stated in the supplied explanation; detailed rulings and applicable amounts can vary according to Islamic jurisprudence and legal context.
Forgiveness and Payment of Blood Money
Surah Baqarah Ayat 178 Tafseer also explains what happens when the victim’s heirs forgive the offender and agree to receive blood money instead of pursuing Qisas.
In such a case, the heirs should seek payment in a reasonable and proper manner. The person responsible for paying the blood money should also make the payment graciously and without unnecessary delay.
This guidance emphasizes fairness, consideration, and the proper fulfillment of an agreement between the parties.
Prohibition of Transgression After Forgiveness
If forgiveness has been granted and an agreement has been reached regarding blood money, committing further aggression afterward is a transgression. The verse warns against exceeding the limits after such an agreement.
The lesson is that people should respect agreements and avoid unlawful retaliation.
Why Is There Life in Qisas?
Allah Almighty states that there is life for people in Qisas. When people understand that unlawful killing has serious consequences, they may be deterred from committing murder.
In this way, the protection of one person’s life can help protect the lives of many others. This principle highlights the importance of justice, accountability, and the preservation of human life.
Lessons from Surah Baqarah 178 Tafseer
