Baytullah Translation – Surah Al-Baqarah 125
English Translation
“And when We made the House (Baytullah) a place of return for the people and a place of security, and take the standing-place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer. And We commanded Ibrahim and Ismail, saying: Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf, those who stay there for worship, and those who bow and prostrate in prayer.”
Tafseer of Baytullah – Background of the Verse
In this verse, Allah Almighty describes the importance of the Baytullah and mentions events connected with its construction and sacred status.
The background of this event goes back to the migration of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) migrated from Iraq towards the land of Shaam according to Allah’s command, Allah Almighty later commanded him to take his wife, Hazrat Hajra (AS), and their son Hazrat Ismail (AS) to the sacred land of Hijaz.
Prophet Ibrahim (AS) obeyed Allah’s command and took Hazrat Hajra (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS) to Makkah.
At that time, Makkah was not a developed city. It was an uninhabited desert area with some bushes and vegetation.
When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) left them and began to return, Hazrat Hajra (AS) asked him why he was leaving them alone in that deserted place.
When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) did not answer, Hazrat Hajra (AS) understood that this was Allah’s command. She then asked whether he was leaving them there according to his own decision or by Allah’s command.
Prophet Ibrahim (AS) replied that he was leaving them there according to Allah’s command.
Hazrat Hajra (AS) responded with complete faith and trust in Allah that if this was Allah’s command, then Allah would not let them be lost or abandoned.
The Dua of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) had walked far enough that he could no longer see his wife and son, he turned towards Makkah and prayed to Allah Almighty.
He asked Allah to make the place prosperous and to make it a place of peace and security.
Allah Almighty accepted the prayer of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), and Makkah became a blessed and secure place.
The Baytullah was also made a place to which people would repeatedly return.
The Arabic concept of Mathabah refers to a place to which people repeatedly return. This meaning can be seen in the lives of Muslims who visit the Kaaba and then develop a deep desire to return again.
The Security of Baytullah
Allah Almighty also granted the Baytullah and its surrounding sacred area a special status of security.
The history of Makkah demonstrates its unique sacredness. Even during times when insecurity and conflict were widespread in Arabia, the Sacred House and the Haram had a special position of safety and respect.
Islam also established special rules concerning the sanctity of the Sacred Precincts.
The Haram of Makkah is therefore not simply a geographical location. It is a sacred place that Allah Almighty has honored and protected.
Reconstruction of Baytullah by Ibrahim and Ismail (AS)
When Hazrat Ismail (AS) grew older, Allah Almighty commanded Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to build the House together with his son.
The foundations of the House were already present, but its structure had been destroyed before their reconstruction. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS) rebuilt the House according to Allah’s command.
This was a great honor and a remarkable act of worship.
The construction of the Baytullah was not merely the building of a physical structure. It was an act of obedience, worship and submission to Allah Almighty.
Purification of Baytullah
Allah Almighty commanded Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS) to keep His House pure for those who came to worship.
The purification of the House has both an outward and an inward meaning.
1. Physical Purification
The House should be kept clean from physical impurities, dirt and anything that compromises its cleanliness.
2. Spiritual Purification
The House should also be protected from spiritual impurity.
Kufr, shirk and idol worship are forms of spiritual impurity. Therefore, the Sacred House was to be purified from all forms of polytheism and the worship of idols.
The Baytullah is a symbol of pure Tawheed and the worship of Allah alone.
