Surah Baqarah Ayat 165 – Translation
Translation (English):
Among mankind are those who take others besides Allah as equals to Him. They love them as they should love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in their love for Allah. If only those who commit wrongdoing could see, when they witness the punishment, that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in punishment!
Tafseer of Surah Baqarah Ayat 165
1. The Condition of Those Who Associate Partners with Allah
In the previous verses, Allah Almighty explained the belief in Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah) and presented signs of His power. In Surah Baqarah Ayat 165, the discussion turns towards the condition of those who associate partners with Allah.
Some people take others besides Allah as their protectors, helpers, and objects of devotion. They love them in a manner that should be reserved for Allah alone. This verse teaches us that our greatest love, worship, and obedience must belong to Allah Almighty.
2. The Meaning of Love and Obedience
According to the explanation discussed in classical Islamic tafseer, love in this context can also involve obedience and submission. Those who associate partners with Allah give their false objects of worship a level of devotion that belongs only to their Creator.
In contrast, true believers have a stronger love for Allah. They turn to Him for help, place their trust in Him, and remember that He alone has ultimate power over all things.

3. Why Believers Love Allah More
Believers understand that Allah is the Creator, Sustainer, and ultimate source of help. They rely upon Him in times of difficulty and express gratitude to Him in times of ease.
The verse contrasts this sincere faith with the inconsistent practices of the polytheists described in the historical context of the Qur’an. When faced with overwhelming danger, some would call upon Allah, recognizing that their other objects of worship could not save them.
This teaches an important lesson: our reliance, worship, and ultimate devotion should be directed towards Allah alone.
4. The Consequences of Shirk
Shirk means associating partners with Allah in His unique rights of worship and divinity. Surah Baqarah Ayat 165 warns that those who commit wrongdoing will recognize the truth when they witness the punishment.
At that moment, they will understand that all power belongs to Allah and that no false deity can independently protect anyone from His judgment.
The verse reminds humanity not to wait until the Hereafter to recognize the truth. Instead, people should turn to Allah sincerely, follow His guidance, and correct their beliefs and actions during their lives.
5. All Power Belongs to Allah
The closing part of Surah Baqarah Ayat 165 emphasizes two essential truths:
- All power and authority ultimately belong to Allah Almighty.
- Allah is severe in punishment for those who persist in wrongdoing and reject His guidance.
These warnings are a call to reflect, repent, and strengthen our relationship with Allah. A believer should seek His pleasure, follow the teachings of the Qur’an, and avoid directing acts of worship towards anyone besides Him.
Lessons from Surah Baqarah Ayat 165
