Surah Baqarah Ayat 145 – Translation
Surah Baqarah Ayat 145-147 – Tafseer
Even if you bring to those who were given the Scripture every kind of sign, they will not follow your Qiblah, nor are you going to follow their Qiblah, and some of them do not follow the Qiblah of others. And indeed, if you were to follow their desires after knowledge has come to you, then surely you would be among the wrongdoers.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 145 – Tafseer
English Tafseer
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wished that the People of the Book would believe and accept our Qiblah and abandon their doubts and suspicions. Allah Almighty therefore tells His Prophet ﷺ that even if he shows the People of the Book every kind of sign, they will never accept his Qiblah, because their refusal to accept the Qiblah is not due to any lack of evidence. Rather, it is only because of stubbornness and hostility, and there is no cure for stubbornness.
The evidence for the truth of your Qiblah was already present with them, just as Prophet Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, said some time before being raised to the heavens that he would go to his Lord and send their Promised One. Until they gained victory from the heavenly realm, they were to remain in Jerusalem, and when they gained that victory, they were to make the House of Allah their Qiblah. Here, the Promised One refers to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Similarly, it is mentioned in the earlier scriptures that when the Prophet ﷺ migrated, his Qiblah would be Bayt al-Maqdis for some time, and then the House of Allah would permanently become his Qiblah.
In any case, when they do not accept the evidence already present in their own scripture, how would they accept your evidence? O Prophet, you are also not going to follow their Qiblah, because We have commanded you that your Qiblah is now the House of Allah. Their previous Qiblah has been abrogated.
The stubbornness and hostility of the People of the Book is not only against the Muslims; there is also much disagreement and hostility among themselves. Because of this disagreement, they do not even accept one another’s Qiblah. The Jews have made the western side of Bayt al-Maqdis their direction of prayer, while the Christians have made its eastern side their direction of prayer.
And O Prophet, if you were to follow the desires of the disbelievers and polytheists after knowledge from revelation has come to you, then you would be among the wrongdoers. The Jews and others used to try to mislead you by saying that you should follow their Qiblah and pray facing it for one year, and then they would follow your Qiblah and pray facing it for another year.
In the Qur’an, Allah Almighty sometimes addresses His Prophet ﷺ while the intended lesson is for the entire Ummah. Here too, the address is made to the Prophet ﷺ, but the purpose is to teach the Ummah that if, after receiving the knowledge of revelation, they follow the desires of the Jews and others, they will become wrongdoers and transgressors.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 146 – Translation
English Translation
Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize him just as they recognize their own sons. Yet indeed, a group among them knowingly conceal the truth.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 146 – Tafseer
English Tafseer
In the next verse, Allah Almighty says that the People of the Book recognize you just as they recognize their own sons. Abdullah ibn Salam (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a great scholar among the Jews, recognized the Prophet ﷺ immediately when he saw his blessed face and realized that he was the final Prophet whose glad tidings had been mentioned in the earlier scriptures. He said that they recognized him just as they recognized their own sons. Rather, they could think that perhaps their wife had committed some betrayal, but they had no doubt regarding the Prophet ﷺ.
Allah Almighty then says that among the People of the Book there is a group that knowingly conceals the truth. For example, the priest named Paul is mentioned as having concealed the truth and deprived Christians of the truth permanently by saying that even if an angel came from heaven and said that what he had told them was wrong, they should not accept what the angel said.

English Translation
The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among those who doubt.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 147 – Tafseer
English Tafseer
In the next verse, Allah Almighty says that the command regarding the change of the Qiblah is absolutely true and comes from Allah. Therefore, the Prophet ﷺ should not have any doubt about it. Here too, the Prophet ﷺ is addressed, while the intended lesson is for the Ummah: the command concerning the change of the Qiblah is the truth from Allah, and the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ should have no doubt about it.
Key Message of Surah Baqarah Ayat 145-147
