Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 134-136 teaches an important principle about personal responsibility, following the true religion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), and believing in all the prophets sent by Allah. These verses remind us that every person will be responsible for their own deeds and that true faith requires belief in all the messengers of Allah.
Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 134-136 – English Translation
This was a nation that has passed away. For them are their deeds, and for you are your deeds. You will not be questioned about what they used to do.
And they said, “Become Jews or Christians and you will be guided.” Say, “Rather, we follow the religion of Ibrahim (AS), inclining toward truth, and he was not among the polytheists.”
Say, “We believe in Allah and in what was revealed to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, and their descendants, and in what was given to Musa and Isa, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims, submitting ourselves to Him.”
Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 134-136 – Tafsir in English
The Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 134-136 emphasize an important principle: every person is responsible for their own deeds. The righteous people and prophets who came before us had their deeds, and they will receive the reward for what they did. We have our own deeds, and we will be accountable for our own actions.
These verses also teach that simply claiming a connection with a prophet or a righteous nation does not benefit a person if their beliefs and actions are not correct. The Jews, Christians, and the polytheists of Makkah associated themselves with Prophet Ibrahim (AS), but their beliefs did not fully follow his teachings. Therefore, merely claiming such a connection cannot save a person on the Day of Judgment.
The Jews and Christians also invited the Muslims to follow their respective religions, claiming that guidance could only be achieved by becoming Jewish or Christian. Allah instructed the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to respond that Muslims follow the religion of Ibrahim (AS), who was upright and devoted exclusively to Allah. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was never among the polytheists.
The next important lesson is the Muslim belief in all the prophets. Muslims believe in Allah and in all the revelation that Allah sent to His messengers. This includes what was revealed to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub and their descendants, as well as what was given to Musa, Isa, and the other prophets.
Islam does not allow believers to accept some prophets while rejecting others. A true Muslim believes in all the prophets sent by Allah and recognizes that they all called people toward the worship of the One true God.
Therefore, Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 134-136 teaches us that true guidance is not based on family, nationality, religious labels, or claims of association. True guidance is based on sincere faith, righteous actions, belief in all the prophets, and complete submission to Allah.
