Introduction
Love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, mentioning his blessed Seerah, sending Durood and Salam upon him, and following his teachings are all important aspects of a Muslim’s faith. However, Milad-un-Nabi and its religious status are matters on which scholars have held different views.
Some scholars use Quranic verses concerning Allah’s blessings, mercy, remembrance, and rejoicing as evidence for commemorating the birth of the Prophet ﷺ. Other scholars maintain that establishing a specific annual religious occasion or celebration requires clear evidence from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.
The purpose of this article is not to criticize any Muslim or question anyone’s intentions. Rather, this article presents the main arguments and principles related to Milad-un-Nabi in an academic and respectful manner.
“The Quran encourages believers to reflect on Allah’s blessings and guidance. You can also read our detailed Quran Tafseer for a deeper understanding of Quranic verses.”
The Prophet ﷺ as a Blessing and Mercy
There is no disagreement among Muslims that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a tremendous blessing from Allah and that his mission was a mercy for humanity.
Allah Almighty says:
Translation:
“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
The arrival of the Prophet ﷺ brought guidance, faith, knowledge, and mercy to humanity. Therefore, loving the Prophet ﷺ, remembering his Seerah, and being grateful for Allah’s guidance are all noble acts.
The main question concerning Milad-un-Nabi is not whether Muslims should love the Prophet ﷺ. Rather, the question is whether a specific annual date and a particular form of religious gathering should be established as a religious practice.
This distinction is important when examining the evidence.
The Verse: “And Proclaim the Blessing of Your Lord”
Allah Almighty says in Surah Ad-Duha:
Translation:
“And proclaim the blessing of your Lord.”
This verse encourages the recognition and mentioning of Allah’s blessings.
Some scholars use this verse in discussions about Milad-un-Nabi, arguing that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is among the greatest blessings through whom Allah granted guidance to humanity. Therefore, they consider mentioning the birth and Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ to be included within the general meaning of remembering Allah’s blessings.
However, another important question is whether this verse specifically establishes an annual religious celebration on a particular date.
The verse itself gives a general instruction regarding Allah’s blessings, but it does not explicitly specify an annual celebration, a particular date, or a particular method of commemoration.
Therefore, scholars differ in how far this verse can be used as evidence for Milad-un-Nabi.
The Verse: “Remind Them of the Days of Allah”
Allah Almighty says in Surah Ibrahim:
Translation:
“And remind them of the Days of Allah.”
This verse refers to remembering the significant days and events through which Allah’s blessings and signs became manifest.
Some scholars connect this general principle with remembering important events related to the life of the Prophet ﷺ and therefore use it as part of their discussion concerning Milad-un-Nabi.
On the other hand, the verse itself does not explicitly mention the birth of the Prophet ﷺ or establish a specific annual date for its commemoration.
Therefore, using this verse as evidence for a specific annual religious gathering requires further interpretation and supporting evidence.
The Verse: “In the Bounty of Allah and in His Mercy — Let Them Rejoice”
Allah Almighty says:
Translation:
“Say: In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy — in that let them rejoice.”
Some scholars understand the Prophet ﷺ as being among the greatest manifestations of Allah’s mercy to humanity. Based on this understanding, they argue that happiness over the arrival of the Prophet ﷺ can be included in the general command to rejoice in Allah’s bounty and mercy.
Other scholars point out that classical Tafsir works also explain Allah’s “bounty” and “mercy” in terms of Islam, the Quran, guidance, and divine revelation.
Thus, while the verse clearly establishes the permissibility or desirability of rejoicing in Allah’s bounty and mercy, it does not explicitly prescribe a particular annual Milad-un-Nabi celebration, date, or format.
How Did the Prophet ﷺ Remember His Day of Birth?
One of the most important Hadiths discussed regarding Milad-un-Nabi is the narration concerning Monday fasting.
Abu Qatadah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about fasting on Monday. He ﷺ said:
Translation:
“It is the day on which I was born and the day on which revelation was sent down to me.”
This Hadith is recorded in Sahih Muslim.
The Hadith establishes a connection between Monday and the birth of the Prophet ﷺ. It also shows that the Prophet ﷺ recognized the significance of the day of his birth.
Scholars, however, differ in how this Hadith should be applied to the issue of Milad-un-Nabi.
One understanding is that the Hadith establishes the legitimacy of expressing gratitude and remembering the blessing of the Prophet’s birth.
Another understanding is that the Prophet ﷺ expressed gratitude for this blessing through fasting on Monday rather than establishing an annual birthday celebration.
Therefore, this Hadith is an important part of the scholarly discussion.
Innovation in Religious Matters
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Translation:
“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which is not from it, it will be rejected.”
This Hadith is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
This establishes an important principle concerning religious practices: acts of worship and religious practices should be based upon valid evidence.
At the same time, it is important to distinguish between a new religious act of worship and a new worldly means.
For example, microphones, websites, printed books, online Quran classes, educational platforms, and modern communication tools did not exist in their present forms during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. However, these are means used to achieve established religious or educational objectives.
Therefore, every new thing cannot automatically be classified as a religious innovation. The nature, purpose, and religious status of the particular action must be examined.
Eid and Religious Festivals
The Sunnah also contains important guidance regarding religious festivals.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, the people had two days on which they engaged in entertainment and celebration. The Prophet ﷺ informed them that Allah had replaced those days with two better days: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
This narration is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud.
Another narration states:
Translation:
“Every people has its festival, and this is our festival.”
Based on these narrations, some scholars emphasize that establishing a recurring religious festival is different from organizing an ordinary gathering for education, Seerah, charity, or remembrance.
This distinction is important when discussing Milad-un-Nabi.
Are All Milad Gatherings the Same?
A gathering associated with the birth of the Prophet ﷺ may contain different activities, such as:
- Recitation of the Quran
- Sending Durood and Salam
- Teaching the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ
- Giving charity
- Feeding people
- Reminding Muslims about the Sunnah
- Discussing the character and teachings of the Prophet ﷺ
These individual actions have their own rulings and should be evaluated according to their respective evidence.
Therefore, it is not necessarily correct to assume that every individual activity in every gathering has exactly the same ruling.
At the same time, another question remains: whether combining these activities on a particular date every year and treating that date as a specific religious occasion has a separate basis in Islamic law.
This is one of the central points of disagreement among scholars regarding Milad-un-Nabi.
Religious Worship and Worldly Means
A common argument is that if a particular annual gathering is considered a new practice simply because it was not held in the same form during the early generations, then modern Islamic institutions such as schools, conferences, examinations, newspapers, websites, and online learning platforms would also have to be considered innovations.
The answer is that there is an important distinction between acts of worship and means of carrying out an established purpose.
A school can be a means of teaching the Quran and Islamic knowledge. A website can be a means of spreading beneficial Islamic information. A microphone can be a means of delivering a sermon or lecture to a large audience.
These means do not necessarily introduce a new act of worship.
Therefore, when discussing Milad-un-Nabi, the central question should be whether a specific recurring religious observance is being established as an act of worship or whether a gathering is simply being used as a permissible means to teach the Seerah and encourage good deeds.
Where Is the Main Difference of Opinion?
The fundamental disagreement concerning Milad-un-Nabi is not about loving the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Muslims agree on the importance of loving the Prophet ﷺ, learning his Seerah, sending Durood and Salam upon him, and following his Sunnah.
The central question is:
Can a specific date every year and a specific religious gathering be established as a recognized religious observance for commemorating the birth of the Prophet ﷺ?
Some scholars consider general Quranic principles concerning Allah’s blessings, mercy, remembrance, and rejoicing to provide a basis for such remembrance.
Other scholars argue that a specific recurring religious observance requires specific evidence from the Prophet ﷺ and the early generations.
Understanding this distinction allows the issue to be discussed academically rather than emotionally.
Summary
The discussion above highlights several important points:
- Love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is an essential part of a Muslim’s faith.
- Remembering Allah’s blessings and being grateful for them are established in the Quran.
- The Quran encourages believers to rejoice in Allah’s bounty and mercy.
- The Quran mentions the remembrance of the “Days of Allah.”
- The Prophet ﷺ mentioned his birth when explaining why he fasted on Monday.
- Authentic Hadiths emphasize that religious practices should be based upon valid evidence.
- The Sunnah provides specific guidance concerning Islamic festivals and Eids.
- Scholars have differed regarding the application of these principles to Milad-un-Nabi.
- Individual activities within a gathering should be assessed according to their own evidence and nature.
- The issue should be discussed with respect, knowledge, and fairness rather than through insults or accusations.
Conclusion
Love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is one of the greatest blessings in the life of a believer. The best expression of this love is to learn his Seerah, send abundant Durood and Salam upon him, follow his Sunnah, adopt his noble character, and spread his teachings.
The discussion surrounding Milad-un-Nabi should likewise remain within the boundaries of Islamic manners and scholarly discussion.
The Quran and Sunnah should be studied carefully, classical Tafsir should be consulted, and differences among qualified scholars should be understood with fairness and respect.
The purpose of this discussion is not to question the faith or intentions of Muslims who hold a different view, but to examine the evidence and principles related to this important issue.
And Allah knows best.
