Surah Baqarah Ayat 97-98 Tafseer Translation (English)
Translation:
Whoever is an enemy of Jibreel (Gabriel), then indeed it is he who has brought this (Qur’an) down upon your heart by the permission of Allah, confirming what came before it, and as a guidance and glad tidings for the believers.
Whoever is an enemy of Allah, His angels, His Messengers, Jibreel, and Mikaeel, then surely Allah is the enemy of the disbelievers.

Background of Revelation (Shan-e-Nuzool)
About three days’ journey from Madinah Munawwarah was a place called Fadak. A prominent Jewish scholar named Abdullah ibn Suriya lived there. He was blind in one eye and was known for his mischievous nature. Because he was considered a religious leader among the Jews, people traveled from distant places to seek guidance from him.
He would instruct them to visit the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and ask difficult questions in an attempt to challenge him.
In Fadak there was a well-known Jewish educational institution called Bayt al-Madaris, where many Jews studied their religion.
On one occasion, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ personally visited this institution so that the message of Islam could reach those who were unwilling to come to him, and so that the proof of truth would be fully established before them.
Coincidentally, Abdullah ibn Suriya was also present there. He entered into a discussion with the Prophet ﷺ. When he could no longer answer the Prophet’s arguments, he finally asked:
“Which angel brings revelation to you?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Jibreel (Gabriel).”
Abdullah ibn Suriya then said:
“Jibreel is our enemy because he used to bring Allah’s punishment upon our forefathers. If the angel who came to you were Mikaeel instead, whose responsibility is rain and provision, we would have accepted your prophethood.”
In response to this false claim, Allah revealed these verses.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 97-98 Tafseer (Why There Is No Justification for Enmity Toward Jibreel (AS)
Allah declares that anyone who is an enemy of Jibreel (Gabriel) has no valid reason for such hostility. Jibreel (AS) brought the Qur’an to the blessed heart of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ only by the command and permission of Allah.
Jibreel (AS) is merely the trusted messenger who delivers Allah’s revelation. He does not speak or act on his own. Just as ambassadors are respected because they only convey the message of the one who sent them, Jibreel (AS) only conveyed Allah’s command. Therefore, showing enmity toward him is, in reality, showing enmity toward Allah’s command.
Meaning of the Name Jibreel
Imam Al-Bukhari (رحمه الله) stated that the name Jibreel may be pronounced in different accepted ways.
The word “Jabr” means servant, while “El” means Allah.
Therefore, the name Jibreel means:
“The Servant of Allah.”
The Original Form of Jibreel (AS)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that he saw Jibreel (AS) in his original form on two occasions:
- Once on the earth.
- Once during the Night Journey and Ascension (Mi’raj).
The Prophet ﷺ described that Jibreel (AS) had six hundred wings, and they covered the entire horizon.
On other occasions, whenever Jibreel (AS) came to the Prophet ﷺ with revelation, he usually appeared in the form of Hazrat Dihyah Al-Kalbi (RA), one of the most handsome companions.
The Excellence of the Qur’an
Allah states that this Qur’an confirms the divine books that came before it, including the Torah and the Gospel.
The Qur’an is a source of guidance and glad tidings for the believers.
Only those who believe sincerely and accept Allah’s commands truly benefit from its guidance.
The Consequence of Enmity Toward Allah, His Angels, and His Messengers
Allah declares that whoever becomes an enemy of Allah, His angels, His Messengers, Jibreel, and Mikaeel should know that Allah is the enemy of the disbelievers.
Jibreel and Mikaeel are mentioned specifically because Abdullah ibn Suriya had referred to these two angels in his objection.
The angels and the Messengers are among Allah’s chosen servants and His beloved ones. Therefore, whoever shows hostility toward them is, in reality, opposing Allah Himself.
As mentioned in the Hadith Qudsi, Allah says:
“Whoever shows enmity to one of My friends (Awliya), I declare war against him.”

آپ فرما دیجیے کہ وہ شخص جو دشمن ہے جبرائیل کا، بے شک اس نے نازل کی ہے اس (قرآن) کو آپ کے دل پر اللہ کی اجازت کے ساتھ، اس حال میں کہ وہ تصدیق کرنے والا ہے اس چیز کی جو اس کے سامنے ہے، اور ہدایت ہے اور خوشخبری ہے ایمان والوں کے لیے۔
جو شخص دشمن ہے اللہ کا، اور اس کے فرشتوں کا، اور اس کے رسولوں کا، اور جبرائیل کا، اور میکائیل کا، تو بے شک اللہ کافروں کا دشمن ہے۔

شانِ نزول (Background of Revelation)
مدینہ منورہ سے تین دن کی مسافت پر ایک جگہ ہے جس کا نام فدک ہے۔ یہاں یہودیوں کا ایک بڑا عالم رہتا تھا جس کا نام عبداللہ بن صوریا تھا۔ یہ کانا تھا اور بڑا شرارتی تھا۔ چونکہ یہ اپنے مذہب کا پیشوا تھا، اس لیے دور دراز سے یہودی اس سے ملنے آیا کرتے تھے۔
یہ آنے والے لوگوں کو سکھا کر بھیجتا تھا کہ تم جا کر نبی اکرم ﷺ سے مختلف سوالات کرو۔
مقام فدک میں یہودیوں کا ایک بڑا مدرسہ تھا جسے بیت المدارس کہا جاتا تھا، جہاں بہت سے یہودی اپنے مذہب کی تعلیم حاصل کرتے تھے۔
ایک مرتبہ رسول اللہ ﷺ اس مدرسے میں تشریف لے گئے تاکہ وہاں موجود لوگوں سے ملاقات کریں، کیونکہ وہ خود آپ ﷺ کی خدمت میں نہیں آتے تھے۔ آپ ﷺ کا مقصد یہ تھا کہ ان پر حق پوری طرح واضح ہو جائے اور حجت مکمل ہو جائے۔
اتفاق سے اس وقت عبداللہ بن صوریا بھی وہاں موجود تھا۔ اس کی رسول اللہ ﷺ سے گفتگو ہوئی۔ جب وہ ہر بات میں لاجواب ہو گیا تو آخر میں اس نے ایک سوال کیا۔
جبرائیل علیہ السلام کے بارے میں سوال
اس نے کہا:
“یہ بتائیے کہ آپ کے پاس وحی کون سا فرشتہ لے کر آتا ہے؟”
رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا:
“جبرائیل۔”
اس نے کہا:
“یہ تو ہمارا دشمن ہے، کیونکہ یہ ہمارے بڑوں پر اللہ کا عذاب لے کر آیا کرتا تھا۔ اگر جبرائیل کی جگہ میکائیل ہوتے، جن کے ذمے بارشوں کا انتظام ہے، تو ہم آپ کی بات مان لیتے۔”
اسی کے جواب میں اللہ تعالیٰ نے یہ آیات نازل فرمائیں۔

جبرائیل علیہ السلام سے دشمنی کا جواب
اللہ تعالیٰ فرماتے ہیں کہ جو شخص جبرائیل علیہ السلام کا دشمن ہے، تو اس کی اس دشمنی کا کوئی جواز نہیں ہے، کیونکہ جبرائیل علیہ السلام نے یہ قرآن آپ ﷺ کے دل مبارک پر اللہ تعالیٰ کے حکم سے نازل کیا ہے۔
یعنی جبرائیل علیہ السلام تو محض اللہ تعالیٰ کے پیغام پہنچانے والے سفیر ہیں۔ بین الاقوامی اصول بھی یہی ہے کہ سفیروں سے دشمنی نہیں رکھی جاتی اور نہ ہی انہیں نقصان پہنچایا جاتا ہے۔ لہٰذا جبرائیل علیہ السلام سے دشمنی دراصل اللہ تعالیٰ کے حکم سے دشمنی ہے۔
جبرائیل علیہ السلام کے نام کا معنی
امام بخاری رحمہ اللہ تعالیٰ فرماتے ہیں کہ جبرائیل کو جیم کی زبر کے ساتھ بھی پڑھا جا سکتا ہے اور جیم کی زیر کے ساتھ بھی۔
“جبر” کا معنی بندہ ہے اور “ایل” کا معنی اللہ ہے، لہٰذا جبرائیل کا معنی ہوا:
“اللہ کا بندہ”۔
رسول اللہ ﷺ نے جبرائیل علیہ السلام کو کس طرح دیکھا؟
حضور اکرم ﷺ فرماتے ہیں:
“میں نے جبرائیل علیہ السلام کو دو مرتبہ ان کی اصل شکل میں دیکھا ہے۔ ایک مرتبہ زمین پر اور دوسری مرتبہ شبِ معراج آسمانوں پر۔”
آپ ﷺ فرماتے ہیں کہ:
“میں نے جبرائیل علیہ السلام کو دیکھا، ان کے چھ سو (600) پر تھے اور انہوں نے پورے افق کو گھیر رکھا تھا۔”
ان دو مواقع کے علاوہ جب بھی جبرائیل علیہ السلام رسول اللہ ﷺ کے پاس تشریف لاتے تو حضرت دحیہ کلبی رضی اللہ عنہ کی شکل میں تشریف لاتے، جو نہایت خوبصورت صحابی تھے۔
قرآن کریم کی خصوصیات
اللہ تعالیٰ مزید فرماتے ہیں کہ:
یہ قرآن ان تمام آسمانی کتابوں کی تصدیق کرتا ہے جو اس سے پہلے نازل ہوئیں، یعنی تورات اور انجیل۔
یہ کتاب اہلِ ایمان کے لیے ہدایت ہے، کیونکہ اس سے حقیقی فائدہ وہی لوگ حاصل کرتے ہیں جو ایمان رکھتے ہیں اور اللہ تعالیٰ کے احکام کو قبول کرتے ہیں۔
اللہ تعالیٰ کے دشمن کون ہیں؟
اللہ تعالیٰ فرماتے ہیں:
جو شخص اللہ تعالیٰ، اس کے فرشتوں، اس کے رسولوں، جبرائیل اور میکائیل کا دشمن ہے، تو بے شک اللہ تعالیٰ بھی ایسے کافروں کا دشمن ہے۔
یہاں جبرائیل اور میکائیل علیہما السلام کا خصوصی ذکر اس لیے فرمایا گیا کہ عبداللہ بن صوریا نے انہی دونوں فرشتوں کا ذکر کیا تھا۔
اللہ کے اولیاء سے دشمنی کا انجام
بے شک فرشتے اور رسول اللہ تعالیٰ کے مقرب بندے اور اولیاء ہیں۔
اسی لیے اللہ تعالیٰ کے ولی سے دشمنی کرنا درحقیقت اللہ تعالیٰ سے دشمنی کرنا ہے۔
جیسا کہ حدیثِ قدسی میں آتا ہے:
“جس نے میرے کسی ولی سے دشمنی کی، اس نے میرے خلاف جنگ کا اعلان کیا۔”
