Introduction
Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 58-59 Tafseer highlights an important event from the history of Bani Israel. Allah Almighty commanded them to enter a blessed city with humility, gratitude, and repentance. However, they changed Allah’s command and disobeyed Him, resulting in a severe punishment.
Translation (Urdu)
اور جب ہم نے کہا: اس بستی میں داخل ہو جاؤ اور جہاں سے چاہو خوشی سے کھاؤ، اور دروازے میں سجدہ کرتے ہوئے داخل ہو اور کہو: “حِطَّةٌ” (اے اللہ! ہمارے گناہ معاف فرما) ہم تمہارے گناہ بخش دیں گے اور نیکی کرنے والوں کو مزید عطا کریں گے۔
پھر ظالموں نے اس بات کو بدل دیا جو ان سے کہی گئی تھی، تو ہم نے ان کے ظلم اور نافرمانی کی وجہ سے ان پر آسمان سے عذاب نازل کیا۔
English Translation
And when We said, “Enter this town and eat freely from wherever you wish, enter the gate in humility, and say, ‘Forgive us.’ We will forgive your sins and increase the reward of those who do good.”
But those who wronged changed the words that had been given to them, so We sent down upon them a punishment from the sky because of their persistent disobedience.
Historical Background
After the death of Prophet Musa (AS), Allah appointed Prophet Yusha bin Nun (AS) as the leader and Prophet of Bani Israel. When the period of wandering in the desert ended, Allah commanded Bani Israel to enter the holy city of Bait-ul-Maqdis.
They were instructed to:
- Enter the city with humility.
- Prostrate before Allah.
- Seek forgiveness for their sins.
- Obey Allah’s commands sincerely.
How Bani Israel Disobeyed
Instead of obeying Allah:
- They entered the city arrogantly.
- They did not prostrate as commanded.
- They changed the words of repentance.
- They mocked Allah’s command and demanded worldly provisions.
In this way, they altered both their actions and their words.
Allah’s Punishment
Due to their repeated disobedience and rebellion, Allah sent a punishment from the sky.
According to many scholars of Tafseer, this punishment was a plague (Ta’un) which spread rapidly among them. It is reported that nearly seventy thousand people died within a short period because of this divine punishment.
Lessons from These Verses
1. Obedience to Allah Brings Success
A believer should follow Allah’s commands without changing or altering them.
2. Repentance Leads to Forgiveness
Allah loves those who sincerely seek forgiveness.
3. Pride Causes Destruction
Arrogance and disobedience lead to loss in this world and the Hereafter.
4. Respect Allah’s Commands
Changing or mocking religious teachings is a serious sin.
