Introduction
The True Source of Honor is not found in fame, reputation, or the praise of people. The inspiring story of Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi and Shams Tabrizi teaches us that real honor belongs only to Allah. This powerful lesson reminds every believer to seek Allah’s pleasure rather than the approval of society.
A Powerful Spiritual Lesson
Whether a person is an Imam of a mosque, a teacher in a madrasa, or a leader of a community, they should never become overly attached to people’s praise and respect.
A famous incident from the lives of Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi and his spiritual guide Shams Tabrizi beautifully illustrates this reality.
The Test of Reputation
One night, Mawlana Rumi invited his teacher, Shams Tabrizi, to his home for dinner. When the meal was ready, Shams unexpectedly asked Rumi:
“Can you bring me some wine to drink?”
Rumi was shocked and respectfully replied that he did not know his teacher drank wine.
Shams insisted and asked him to bring it.
Rumi hesitated. He feared losing his reputation among his servants and the people of the city who respected him as a scholar and spiritual leader.
However, out of obedience and love for his teacher, he covered himself with a cloak and went to purchase a bottle.
Public Humiliation
As Rumi entered the Christian quarter and visited a wine shop, people recognized him and began following him.
Soon, a crowd gathered. They saw him leaving with a bottle hidden beneath his cloak.
By the time he reached the mosque, people publicly accused him of buying wine.
They insulted him, mocked him, and some even physically attacked him.
Yet Rumi remained silent and did not defend himself.
The Truth Revealed
At that moment, Shams Tabrizi appeared and addressed the crowd:
“How dare you accuse a great scholar and jurist of drinking wine? This bottle contains vinegar, not wine.”
When the bottle was opened, everyone discovered that it indeed contained vinegar.
Earlier, Shams had secretly instructed the shopkeeper to give Rumi vinegar instead of wine.
The crowd was shocked and ashamed. They immediately apologized and sought Rumi’s forgiveness.
The Lesson from Shams Tabrizi
Afterward, Rumi asked his teacher why he had put him through such a difficult trial.
Shams replied:
“You needed to learn that people’s respect and admiration are temporary and unreliable.
A moment ago, these same people honored you. Yet with a single suspicion, they insulted and attacked you.
Do not depend on the honor given by people.
True honor belongs only to Allah.
His judgment never changes, and His honor never fades.”
The Eternal Reality
The respect of people can disappear in a moment.
The pleasure of Allah is everlasting.
Therefore, a believer should seek acceptance from Allah rather than admiration from people.
