Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (رحمۃ اللہ علیہ) explained the Virtues of Knowledge in Islam through many Quranic verses, Prophetic traditions, statements of the righteous predecessors, rational arguments, and several subtle and scholarly points. Today, we will reflect on two of these beautiful scholarly insights.Understanding the Virtues of Knowledge in Islam helps Muslims recognize the value of beneficial knowledge and apply Islamic teachings in daily life.
Virtues of Knowledge in Islam: Knowledge Helps a Person Escape Sin
The first point is that without knowledge, it is difficult to escape from sin. When a person commits a sin because of ignorance, meaning that he does not even know that an action is sinful, the hope of leaving that sin becomes weaker.
Knowledge brings light into a person’s life. It teaches him that a particular path is the path of sin and guides him toward repentance. If a person does not even know that he is following a path of disobedience and sin, how can the desire for repentance develop within him?
However, when knowledge teaches him that his path is wrong and may become a cause of Allah Almighty’s displeasure, feelings of regret and shame arise in the heart. The words of repentance and seeking forgiveness begin to come to his tongue, and hope develops that he can change the direction of his life.
Virtues of Knowledge in Islam: The Lesson from Adam (علیہ السلام)
To understand this reality, there can hardly be a better example than the story of Prophet Adam (علیہ السلام) and Iblis.
Prophet Adam (علیہ السلام) made a mistake, but knowledge did not allow him to remain upon that mistake. Knowledge made him understand that the path was wrong. When he realized his mistake, he immediately turned toward repentance and sought forgiveness.
This story is one of the important examples of the Virtues of Knowledge in Islam, showing how Allah honored Adam (علیہ السلام) with knowledge.
Thus, Prophet Adam (علیہ السلام) experienced a lapse, but knowledge did not allow him to remain upon it.
On the other hand, Iblis remained firm upon his mistake and did not repent. This teaches us an important lesson about the Virtues of Knowledge in Islam: knowledge helps a person recognize wrong, feel regret, and return toward obedience to Allah Almighty.
Virtues of Knowledge in Islam: The Honor of a Scholar Who Defends Truth
The second point is the value and status of a true scholar.
Imam al-Razi (رحمۃ اللہ علیہ) presented a subtle and scholarly argument here from the story of Prophet Yusuf (علیہ السلام).
When Prophet Yusuf (علیہ السلام) needed a minister, Allah Almighty sent the message through Angel Jibril (علیہ السلام) that a particular person should be appointed as his minister.
When Prophet Yusuf (علیہ السلام) saw that person, he was extremely concerned because the man appeared to be in a state of great difficulty and hardship. Prophet Yusuf (علیہ السلام) wondered how such a person could handle such an important position and fulfill its responsibilities.
Allah Almighty explained that there was a reason for this honor.
When an accusation had been made against Prophet Yusuf (علیہ السلام) and his purity was questioned, this same person had defended him. He had said that if Yusuf’s shirt was torn from the front, then Zulaikha was truthful, but if Yusuf’s shirt was torn from the back, then Zulaikha was false and Yusuf (علیہ السلام) was truthful.
From this, Imam al-Razi (رحمۃ اللہ علیہ) derived a subtle point: if a person who defended Prophet Yusuf (علیہ السلام) was considered worthy of participating in worldly authority because of that defense, then why should a person who defends the true religion of Allah Almighty not deserve honor, appreciation, and reward from Allah?
A person defended a Prophet from an accusation and was honored with a share in worldly authority. Therefore, a person who defends the religion brought by the Prophets, protects it from false attacks through strong arguments, and represents the truth against doubts and misconceptions deserves honor, respect, and appreciation.
This is another important aspect of the Virtues of Knowledge in Islam.
Knowledge and the Protection of the True Religion
It is clear that without knowledge, a person cannot correctly represent the true religion. He cannot properly answer doubts and misconceptions, nor can he effectively protect the truth from false arguments.
Therefore, knowledge becomes a means of protecting the true religion and responding to attacks against it. This is why knowledge can become a cause of honor, respect, reward, and divine favor.
The Virtues of Knowledge in Islam are therefore not limited to personal learning. True knowledge should guide a person toward repentance, obedience, truth, and the protection of the religion of Allah Almighty.
Two Scholarly Lessons from Imam al-Razi
We have presented two of the subtle and scholarly arguments mentioned by Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi
Read these beautiful lessons yourself, reflect upon them, and share them with others so that more people can benefit from them.
The remaining scholarly arguments and insights will, InshaAllah, be discussed later. The Virtues of Knowledge in Islam also become clear when scholars use their knowledge to defend truth and guide people toward righteousness.
Virtues of Knowledge in Islam: A Reminder
Among the Virtues of Knowledge in Islam is its ability to help a believer distinguish between truth and falsehood.
Knowledge is a light that helps a person recognize right from wrong, leave sin, seek forgiveness, and stand for truth. May Allah Almighty grant us beneficial knowledge and the ability to act upon it. Ameen.
“Surah Al-Baqarah 143-144 reminds believers that true faith requires sincere obedience to the commands of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.”
