Surah Al-Baqarah 143-144 translation
English Translation
And thus We have made you a moderate nation so that you may be witnesses over the people and the Messenger may be a witness over you. And We did not make the Qiblah upon which you were except so that We may know the person who follows the Messenger from the one who turns back on his heels. And indeed, it was certainly a great matter except for those whom Allah guided. And Allah would never cause your faith to be wasted. Indeed, Allah is certainly very Kind and Merciful to the people.
Surah Al-Baqarah 143-144 Tafseer
Surah Al-Baqarah 143-144 Tafseer
In Surah Al-Baqarah 143-144, Allah Almighty describes the virtue and excellence of the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ. Allah has made the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ a moderate, just, and balanced nation. Some commentators have explained this to mean that the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ has been made a means between Allah and the people.
Allah gave this virtue so that the Ummah would become witnesses over the people and the Messenger ﷺ would be a witness over the Ummah.
The meaning of this testimony is explained in Sahih Bukhari: On the Day of Judgment, Allah Almighty will call the Prophets and their nations. They will be called one after another.
For example, when Prophet Nuh (Noah) عليه السلام and his nation are called, Allah Almighty will ask Prophet Nuh عليه السلام whether he conveyed the commands of Allah to his people. Prophet Nuh عليه السلام will say that he certainly conveyed the message.
However, when his nation is asked about it, they will completely deny it. According to the Islamic legal principle, the claimant must provide evidence. If he does not have witnesses, the person who denies the claim is asked to take an oath.
Allah Almighty will then ask Prophet Nuh عليه السلام to present his witness. Prophet Nuh عليه السلام will present the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ as witnesses. The Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ will testify in favor of Prophet Nuh عليه السلام that he truly conveyed the message to his people.
The people of Prophet Nuh عليه السلام will object that these people were not present at the time of the event and therefore cannot be witnesses. Indeed, the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ came into existence approximately six thousand years after Prophet Nuh عليه السلام, so they will argue that their testimony should not be accepted against them.
Allah Almighty will ask the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ how they came to know that Prophet Nuh عليه السلام conveyed the message to his people.
The Ummah will say that if Allah and His Word are true—and certainly they are true—then Allah has stated in His Book that Prophet Nuh عليه السلام told his people not to worship anyone except Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also informed them about this, and the Prophet ﷺ is certainly truthful.
Then Allah Almighty will ask the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ whether he had informed his Ummah about this. The Prophet ﷺ will say that he had indeed informed them and will testify in favor of his Ummah.
After the testimony of the Prophet ﷺ, there will be no need for anyone else’s testimony. This is a great virtue of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his Ummah.
Allah Almighty further says that He commanded the change of the Qiblah so that it would become clear who sincerely follows the Prophet ﷺ and who is weak in faith.
When the command to change the Qiblah was given, those whose faith was strong sincerely accepted the command. They said that the real matter is to obey the command of Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ. Whatever direction Allah and His Messenger ﷺ command them to face, they would sincerely accept it.
Those who were weak in faith, however, turned back and said that they did not understand why they were first commanded to face one direction and then another direction. They insisted that their previous religion was correct.
The command regarding the change of the Qiblah was indeed a great matter, meaning that accepting such a command could be difficult, except for those whom Allah guided.
This is understandable because when a person has been doing something for a long period of time and is then commanded to leave it, accepting the new command can be difficult. However, for those who are firm believers and obey every command of Allah, accepting such a command is not difficult.
When the Muslims were commanded to change the Qiblah, some people wondered about those Muslims who had prayed facing Bayt al-Maqdis before the command to change the Qiblah and had passed away in that condition. They wondered what would happen to the prayers of those people.
Those who were alive could correct their practice, but what would happen to those who had already passed away?
Allah Almighty therefore stated that He would not cause their worship to be wasted. Those who passed away before the command to change the Qiblah would certainly receive reward for their worship because Allah Almighty is extremely Kind and Merciful to the people.
