Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 – Patience and Prayer
The main lesson of Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 is that believers should seek Allah’s help through patience and prayer. These verses remind Muslims that patience is not simply waiting for difficulties to end, but remaining firm in obedience, avoiding sins, and accepting the decisions of Allah Almighty.
The message of Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 also gives believers hope during difficult circumstances. Allah’s companionship and support are promised to those who remain patient.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 – Life of Martyrs
The tafseer of Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 explains that those who are killed in the way of Allah should not simply be considered dead. Their special life is beyond the ordinary perception of people and is known as the life of Barzakh.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 – Virtue of Martyrdom
The lessons of Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 include patience during hardship, turning towards prayer, and understanding the special status of those who are martyred in the way of Allah.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 – Intention in the Way of Allah
In Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154, believers are reminded that patience and prayer are means through which they seek help from Allah. The verses also explain that the life of those martyred in Allah’s way is different from ordinary worldly life.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 therefore provides important lessons about patience, prayer, Allah’s support, hardship, and the life of martyrs.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 – English Translation
O believers! Seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with those who are patient. And do not say of those who are killed in the way of Allah that they are dead. Rather, they are alive, but you do not have awareness of their life.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 153-154 – English Tafseer
In this verse, Allah Almighty commands Muslims to seek help from Allah through patience and prayer when facing the disbelievers. Some people object to this by saying that patience is also other than Allah and prayer is also other than Allah, and therefore it proves that seeking help from other than Allah is permissible.
The answer to these people is that the preposition ب is used with patience. It means that you should seek help from Allah through patience and prayer, just as we seek help from Allah through righteous deeds or through the means of the Prophets and saints. However, help is to be sought only from Allah.
In any case, patience means restraining oneself. There are three types of patience:
Three Types of Patience
First: To remain patient in obedience to Allah, meaning to restrain oneself in worship so that one continues to perform acts of worship and good deeds.
Second: To restrain oneself from sins.
Third: To happily endure all the hardships that come upon oneself and remain content with all the decisions of Allah Almighty.
All three types are included in the meaning of patience. Whoever follows and practices all three types of patience will always have the help and support of Allah with him.
There is a little difficulty in being patient, but after that, the doors of Allah’s mercy and support open. Many virtues of patience have been mentioned in the blessed Ahadith.
For example, it is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari that no one has been given anything better than patience.
Similarly, Hazrat Ibn Abbas (رضی اللہ عنہما) says that whoever is given four things has been given the goodness of this world and the Hereafter:
- A heart that is always grateful.
- A tongue that remembers Allah.
- A body that remains patient.
- A woman who does not betray her husband regarding herself or his wealth.
Worldly difficulties reach everyone, whether good or bad, disbeliever or believer. However, believers, through patience, open the doors of mercy and support for themselves and become deserving of reward, as stated in Surah Az-Zumar:
Indeed, We will give those who are patient their reward without measure.
Help Through Prayer
Allah Almighty further says that along with patience, you should also seek help from Allah through prayer.
Hazrat Hudhaifah (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) says that whenever a difficulty came to him, he immediately turned towards prayer, because when the spirit of prayer develops within a person, he reaches a high level of Tawheed.
In any case, the benefit of patience is that you will receive the companionship and support of Allah Almighty, and this is a very great source of happiness.
For example, if a powerful person in this world tells a weak person, “I am with you,” the weak person receives courage. So when Allah Almighty tells someone, “I am with you,” imagine how much courage that person will receive.
Life of Those Martyred in the Way of Allah
One of the most important occasions for patience is death, especially when it occurs contrary to the natural course.
In this context, Allah Almighty says that those who are killed in the way of Allah should not be called dead. They are alive, but you do not understand their life.
Allamah Wahidi (رحمۃ اللہ علیہ) says that this verse was revealed concerning the martyrs of Badr. At Badr, eight Ansari Companions and six Muhajir Companions were martyred. Someone said regarding these martyrs that they had died and had been deprived of the blessings of this world. In response, this verse of Allah was revealed, stating that those who die in the way of Allah remain alive.
The life of the martyrs is called Barzakh life. Barzakh means a veil. Just as we cannot see something hidden behind a veil, similarly, we cannot see this life of the martyrs.
Scholars state that the strongest Barzakh life is that of the Prophets because it has been stated regarding the noble Prophets that Allah has forbidden the earth from consuming the bodies of the Prophets. The soil of the earth does not consume their bodies. Their bodies remain alive and preserved.
Sometimes the bodies of martyrs also remain preserved. Since a martyr presents himself with his wealth and life in the way of Allah, his rank is very great. The blessings of this world are nothing compared with what he receives.
Virtue of Martyrdom
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (رضی اللہ عنہ) says that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that he wished to be killed in the way of Allah, then brought back to life, then killed again, and then brought back to life again.
Allah Almighty has many wisdoms. Allah did not fulfill this particular wish of the Prophet ﷺ in this manner, but the desire for martyrdom was fulfilled in another way. During the Battle of Khaybar, a Jewish woman mixed poison into the meat of a goat and gave it to the Prophet ﷺ. The effect of the poison stopped temporarily, but at the time of his death its effect appeared again, and due to this the Prophet ﷺ passed away and attained the rank of martyrdom.
Intention in Fighting for the Sake of Allah
To attain the rank of martyrdom, it is necessary that a warrior fights the enemies of the religion only for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, so that the word of Allah may become supreme.
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa Al-Ashari (رضی اللہ عنہ) that one person fights for the sake of war booty, another person fights for his fame, and another person fights so that his bravery may become well known. The Prophet ﷺ was asked: Which of them is fighting in the way of Allah?
He ﷺ replied:
The one who fights so that the word of Allah becomes the highest.
