Translation
As We have sent among you a Messenger from among yourselves who recites to you Our verses, purifies you, and teaches you the Book and wisdom, and teaches you that which you did not know. So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not be ungrateful to Me.
The Blessing of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
In the previous verse, Allah Almighty mentioned that making the House of Allah (the Kaaba) your Qiblah was a great blessing. In connection with this, Allah Almighty mentions in this verse another great blessing: just as He made the House of Allah your Qiblah, which is the most excellent of all Qiblahs, He also blessed you with a Messenger who is the most excellent of all messengers.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recites the verses of the Quran to you, purifies you from outward and inward impurities, and teaches you the Book and wisdom. He also teaches you things that you did not know before.
Three Basic Responsibilities of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
From this verse, it becomes clear that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had three basic responsibilities.
Recitation of the Quran
The first responsibility of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was to recite the Book of Allah.
The scholars state that this shows that reciting the Holy Quran is itself a purposeful act of worship. For this reason, it is mentioned in the Hadith that whoever recites one letter from the Quran receives ten good deeds. The Prophet ﷺ said that he does not say that “Alif Lam Meem” is one letter; rather, Alif is one letter, Lam is one letter, and Meem is one letter.
Teaching the Book and Wisdom
The second responsibility of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was to teach the Ummah the Book and wisdom. Wisdom refers to the Sunnah and the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ.
Purification of the Ummah
The third responsibility of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was to purify the Ummah. This means cleansing their outward and inward selves from all kinds of impurities.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Taught What People Did Not Know
Allah Almighty further says that this Prophet taught you things that you did not know before the coming of the Prophet.
For example, when Hazrat Jafar رضي الله عنه gave his speech before the Negus, he mentioned that this Prophet came and taught them things they did not know before. He taught them the methods of worship, such as prayer and fasting, and also taught them how to establish and manage the best system of government.
For this reason, the Companions رضي الله عنهم were able, within a short period, to establish their rule over a large part of the world.
Remembering Allah
Allah Almighty says that just as He has given you great blessings, it is also your responsibility to remember Him at all times. As a result, Allah will remember you.
The commentator Imam Baydawi رحمه الله explains that this means: remember Allah through obedience, and Allah will remember you by granting you reward.
Two Types of Dhikr
The scholars mention two types of remembrance:
- Remembering Allah with the tongue or the heart. This is also a great act.
- Remaining constantly engaged in obedience to Allah.
Thanking Allah for His Blessings
Allah Almighty further says that your other responsibility is to thank Him and not to be ungrateful.
When you show gratitude to Allah, He will increase His blessings upon you.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
