Translation of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 187
It has been made lawful for you to have marital relations with your wives during the nights of fasting. They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. Allah knew that you were betraying yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now have relations with them and seek what Allah has decreed for you. Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread. Then complete your fast until nightfall. Do not have marital relations with them while you are observing I’tikaf in the mosques. These are the limits set by Allah, so do not approach them. Thus Allah makes His signs clear to the people so that they may become righteous.
Explanation of Surah Baqarah Ayat 187 Tafseer
1. The Permission to Have Marital Relations During Ramadan Nights
At the beginning of this section, Allah explained the obligation of fasting. In this verse, He describes several important rulings related to fasting.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 187 Tafseer explains that marital relations with one’s wife are permitted during the nights of fasting.
In the early days of Islam, the ruling was that a fasting person could eat, drink, and have marital relations after breaking the fast until going to sleep. Once the person fell asleep, the next day’s fast began, and eating, drinking, and marital relations became prohibited until the next time the fast was broken.
Following this ruling was difficult for some Companions.
An incident reported in Musnad Ahmad concerns Hazrat Sirmah Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). After working throughout the day while fasting, he returned home in the evening and asked his wife whether there was anything to eat. She replied that nothing was ready yet and went to prepare food. When she returned, she found that he had fallen asleep. According to the earlier ruling, he could no longer eat, so he continued fasting the following day without having eaten. By midday, he began experiencing fainting spells.
When this incident was brought to the attention of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), this verse was revealed, granting permission to eat, drink, and have marital relations from the time of breaking the fast until true dawn.
Another incident mentioned in the Hadith concerns Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). After offering the Isha prayer with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he remained with him in conversation for a long time. When he returned home, he found that his wife had gone to sleep. He intended to have marital relations with her, but she said that she had already slept and believed that the restriction had begun. Hazrat Umar understood the situation differently and had relations with her.
Similar incidents also occurred among other Companions. When these incidents became known, Allah revealed the verse explaining that He knew they had been acting against their own interests, but He accepted their repentance and forgave them.
2. Why Spouses Are Described as Garments
Surah Baqarah Ayat 187 Tafseer also explains the beautiful expression that spouses are garments for one another.
The commentators explain that, just as a person needs clothing, men and women need one another in marriage. Clothing remains close to the body, and a person benefits from it directly. Similarly, spouses share closeness and benefit from one another within marriage.
Clothing also covers a person’s shortcomings and protects their dignity. In the same way, spouses should protect one another’s shortcomings and avoid exposing private matters before others.
This description highlights the closeness, protection, and mutual responsibilities of husband and wife.
3. Seeking What Allah Has Decreed
The verse permits marital relations during the nights of fasting and instructs believers to seek what Allah has decreed for them.
The provided Tafseer explains that marital relations should not be viewed only as a means of satisfying desire; spouses should also desire offspring. It therefore advises seeking marital relations in a manner through which children may be conceived.
4. Eating and Drinking Until Dawn
Surah Baqarah Ayat 187 Tafseer explains that Muslims may eat and drink until the true dawn becomes clear.
The expression “white thread” refers to the light of dawn, while the “black thread” refers to the darkness of night. When the light of dawn becomes distinguishable from the darkness, the time for beginning the fast has arrived.
After that, Muslims must refrain from eating and drinking and complete their fast until nightfall.
This verse provides clear guidance about the beginning and end of the daily fast.
5. The Rules of I’tikaf in Islam
I’tikaf means remaining in a mosque with the intention of worshipping Allah.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 187 Tafseer explains that a person observing I’tikaf must not have marital relations during this period.
The provided Tafseer states that men observe I’tikaf in mosques, while women may designate a place in their homes for this worship and observe I’tikaf there. It also mentions that, during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), his wives intended to observe I’tikaf and erected tents in the mosque. According to the account cited from Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet ordered those tents to be removed.
The verse specifically prohibits marital relations during I’tikaf and emphasizes the importance of observing its rules.
6. Allah’s Limits and the Importance of Taqwa
The final part of the verse declares that these rulings are the limits established by Allah.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 187 Tafseer reminds believers not to approach the boundaries set by Allah. His commands and prohibitions are explained clearly so that people may develop Taqwa, remain obedient, and protect themselves from His punishment on the Day of Resurrection.
