Quranic Verse
“And We will certainly test you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits. But give good news to those who patiently endure.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:155)
Tests in Islam and the Trials of Life
In this verse, Allah Almighty says that Tests in Islam are a reality for believers. The scholars of Tafseer explain that every person in this world is tested, whether they are a believer or a disbeliever, righteous or sinful. However, when believers face trials, they remain patient, and Allah Almighty raises their ranks because of their patience.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that a person is tested according to the strength of his religion. In other words, the stronger a person’s faith is, the greater his test can be. The Prophets had the strongest faith, and therefore they faced some of the most difficult trials and hardships.
Tests in Islam According to the Strength of Faith
The lives of the Prophets teach us important lessons about Tests in Islam. They faced rejection, suffering, hardship and persecution, yet they remained steadfast in their mission.
It is narrated regarding Prophet Nuh (عليه السلام) that his people subjected him to severe persecution. Despite these difficulties, he continued calling his people towards Islam.
Similarly, some Prophets faced imprisonment, persecution and even death at the hands of their people. These examples show the level of patience and steadfastness expected from those who believe in Allah.
Fear and Hunger as Tests
Allah Almighty says that He will test people through fear and hunger. Sometimes a person may be tested through difficult circumstances, fear of an enemy, financial difficulties, or a shortage of food.
The scholars explain that hunger can generally be of two types:
1. Necessary Hunger
Necessary hunger occurs when food is unavailable or when there is less food than what a person needs. This can become a test from Allah Almighty.
2. Voluntary Hunger
Voluntary hunger is when a person willingly avoids food for the sake of Allah. Ramadan fasting is a clear example. Food may be available, but a Muslim avoids eating and drinking during the fasting hours because of obedience to Allah.
Both situations can teach a believer patience, self-control and reliance upon Allah. These are important lessons from Tests in Islam.
Tests Through Wealth, Life and Fruits
Allah Almighty also tells us that people may be tested through the loss or shortage of wealth, lives and fruits.
A believer who faces financial loss, the death of a loved one, illness, or a reduction in blessings should remember that these difficulties can become a means of reward when faced with patience and faith.
This is another important aspect of Tests in Islam: difficulties do not necessarily mean that Allah has abandoned a person. Rather, a believer can turn a hardship into an opportunity for patience, repentance and spiritual growth.
Difficulties Can Become a Means of Forgiveness
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the difficulties and suffering experienced by a believer can become a means through which Allah removes sins.
It is narrated that when the verse was revealed:
“Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it.”
(Surah An-Nisa, 4:123)
Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه asked the Prophet ﷺ about the way of salvation. The Prophet ﷺ asked whether he experienced illness and difficulties. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه replied that such things happened to him. The Prophet ﷺ explained that these difficulties can become a means by which Allah forgives sins.
Therefore, Tests in Islam can carry wisdom and reward even when a believer cannot immediately understand their purpose.
Illness Can Also Be a Test
On one occasion, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ visited a woman who was suffering from fever and trembling. Some people complained about the fever, but the Prophet ﷺ taught that a believer should not curse or condemn illness because such suffering can become a means of forgiveness for sins.
This teaches Muslims to maintain patience during illness and difficulty and to hope for Allah’s reward.
The Reward for Losing Children
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught about the tremendous reward given to parents who patiently endure the death of their children.
According to narrations, parents who lose children and remain patient can receive great reward from Allah and enter Paradise. These teachings show the extraordinary reward associated with patience during one of life’s most painful Tests in Islam.
Even the loss of a child, despite being an extremely painful trial, can become a source of immense reward when parents remain patient and seek Allah’s pleasure.
Allah Raises the Rank of a Patient Believer
The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah may have prepared a particular rank in Paradise for a believer. If that person cannot reach that rank through his or her deeds alone, Allah may test the person with difficulties.
When the believer patiently endures those difficulties, Allah can raise that person’s rank because of their patience.
This gives us a powerful lesson from Tests in Islam: a hardship may be difficult, but patience can transform that hardship into a means of spiritual elevation.
True Patience Comes at the First Shock
It is important to understand that true patience is demonstrated at the beginning of a calamity. As time passes, a person gradually becomes accustomed to the situation.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once saw a woman crying beside a grave. He advised her to be patient. She replied that if the Prophet ﷺ had experienced the same calamity, he would understand how difficult it was for her.
Later, she learned that the person who had spoken to her was the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She became very worried and went to him. She apologized and said that she would now remain patient for the sake of Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ explained that true patience is the patience shown at the first shock of the calamity.
Lessons from Tests in Islam
The verse of Surah Al-Baqarah teaches several important lessons:
- Every person can face trials and difficulties in life.
- Believers should respond to hardships with patience and faith.
- Fear and hunger can be tests from Allah.
- Loss of wealth and loved ones can also be tests.
- Difficulties may become a means of forgiveness for sins.
- Patience can raise a believer’s rank.
- The strongest believers may face severe trials.
- True patience is especially important at the beginning of a calamity.
- A believer should seek Allah’s reward and mercy during difficult times.
Conclusion
The concept of Tests in Islam teaches us that difficulties are a part of worldly life. A believer should not become hopeless when facing fear, hunger, financial loss, illness or the death of a loved one.
Instead, Muslims should remember Allah, remain patient, make dua and trust in His wisdom. Every hardship faced with sincere patience can become a source of reward, forgiveness and spiritual growth.
May Allah Almighty grant us patience during every trial, forgive our sins, strengthen our faith and make us among those who receive His great reward. Ameen.
The lives of the Prophets teach us important lessons about patience and prayer. These lessons are also explained in our detailed Tafseer of Surah Baqarah Ayat 153–154.
