Introduction to Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer
Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer explains an important lesson about following Allah’s guidance instead of blindly following the traditions of ancestors. These verses highlight the importance of understanding the truth, accepting divine guidance, and using our intellect to distinguish right from wrong.
Allah Almighty describes the attitude of people who reject His revelation simply because they prefer the beliefs and practices of their forefathers. The following explanation presents the translation and tafseer in simple English.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 170 Translation in English
When it is said to them, “Follow what Allah has revealed,” they say, “Rather, we will follow what we found our forefathers following.” Even if their forefathers understood nothing and were not guided?
This verse highlights the mistake of rejecting Allah’s guidance merely to preserve ancestral traditions. Islam teaches Muslims to follow the Quran and authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ rather than accepting a belief simply because previous generations followed it.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 170 Tafseer in English
In Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer, the first verse explains the attitude of the polytheists who refused to follow Allah’s revelation. When they were invited to accept the guidance sent by Allah, they responded that they would continue following the practices of their forefathers.
Allah Almighty questions whether people should follow their ancestors even when those ancestors lacked proper understanding and guidance.
Is Following Islamic Scholars the Same as Blind Imitation?
Some people misunderstand this verse and assume that following qualified Islamic scholars or the established schools of Islamic jurisprudence is also prohibited. However, there is an important distinction between blindly following an incorrect tradition and seeking guidance from knowledgeable scholars.
Muslims may follow qualified scholars, including Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, Imam Al-Shafi’i, and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, in matters of Islamic jurisprudence. These scholars used their knowledge of the Quran, Sunnah, and the principles of Islamic law to understand and explain religious rulings.
Qualified scholars are not considered infallible. Their scholarly judgments may be correct or mistaken. Therefore, following a qualified scholar in matters requiring Islamic legal expertise is different from rejecting Allah’s guidance simply because one’s ancestors followed another practice.
The Quran also encourages people to follow those who turn sincerely to Allah and guide others towards His path. The example of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him), who followed the way of his righteous forefathers, also demonstrates that following a path rooted in faith and divine guidance is not the same as blindly following people without considering the truth.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 171 Translation in English
The example of those who disbelieve is like that of someone who calls out to something that hears nothing but calls and cries. They are deaf, dumb, and blind, so they do not understand.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 171 Tafseer in English
The second verse presents an example to explain the spiritual condition of people who refuse to understand the truth. A person may call animals that cannot understand the meaning of human speech. Similarly, those who reject divine guidance may hear the words being conveyed to them without understanding or accepting their message.
In Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer, the description of disbelievers as deaf, dumb, and blind refers to their unwillingness to benefit from the faculties Allah has given them.
Why Are They Described as Deaf, Dumb, and Blind?
A question may arise: Were all disbelievers physically deaf, unable to speak, or blind? The answer is no. These words describe their spiritual condition rather than necessarily referring to physical disabilities.
- Deaf: They refuse to listen to and accept the truth.
- Dumb: They do not speak in support of the truth.
- Blind: They fail to recognize the signs that point towards Allah’s guidance.
When someone possesses the ability to hear, speak, and see but refuses to use these abilities to recognize the truth, these expressions describe the person’s spiritual failure to benefit from them.

Lessons from Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer
These verses teach several important lessons:
- Follow Allah’s guidance: The Quran and authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ should guide our beliefs and actions.
- Avoid blind imitation: A tradition should not be accepted merely because previous generations followed it.
- Seek knowledge: Religious matters should be understood through reliable Islamic sources and qualified scholars.
- Use your intellect: Allah has given human beings the ability to listen, reflect, and recognize the truth.
- Remain open to guidance: A person should not reject the truth because of pride, habit, or social pressure.
Conclusion
Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer reminds us that following family traditions is not a substitute for following Allah’s guidance. These verses encourage believers to seek authentic knowledge, reflect on divine revelation, and recognize the truth with sincerity.
May Allah Almighty grant us beneficial knowledge, understanding of the Holy Quran, and the ability to follow His guidance. Ameen.

Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer —
Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer —
Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer —
Surah Baqarah Ayat 170-171 Tafseer
