Translation of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 156-157
Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” They are those upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy, and it is those who are rightly guided.
“Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 156-157 teaches believers how to respond to hardship with patience and faith.”
Tafseer of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 156-157
In these verses, Allah Almighty says that the patient are those who, when a calamity befalls them, do not do anything wrong or against the Shariah with their tongue or limbs. Rather, they say, “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un.”
The meaning of “Inna Lillah” is that indeed we belong to Allah, meaning that Allah Almighty is the true Owner of all of us. He can deal with us as He wills. It is Allah Almighty’s will whether He keeps us hungry or feeds us, whether He keeps us poor or gives us wealth, whether He makes us ill or gives us health, and whether He keeps us alive or gives us death. We have no right to object to Allah.
The meaning of “Inna Ilayhi Raji’un” is that we all have to return to Him.
The scholars of Tafseer say that everything that a believer dislikes is a calamity, and one should recite “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un” upon it.
As Hazrat Aisha (RA) says, once our lamp went out. The Prophet ﷺ recited “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un” upon it. I said that this is recited at the time of calamity. The Prophet ﷺ said that whatever troubles a believer is a calamity.
Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (RA) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever slaps his face at the time of calamity, tears his clothes, and does the actions of the days of ignorance is not from us.
From this verse and Hadith, it is known that at the time of calamity, one should say “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un.” Objecting to Allah, mourning loudly, lamenting, and similar actions are against the Shariah and are forbidden.
A Hadith states that when someone’s child dies, Allah Almighty asks the angels whether they have taken the soul of His servant’s son. The angels say yes. Then Allah Almighty asks what he said. The angels answer that he remained patient, said “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un,” and praised You. Allah says: Prepare a palace in Paradise for My servant, whose name will be Bayt-ul-Hamd.
Similarly, Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Umm Salama (RA) says that the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un” at the time of calamity and also recites “Allahumma ajurni fi museebati wakhluf li khairan minha,” Allah Almighty will grant him a better replacement.
Hazrat Umm Salama (RA) says that when her husband Abu Salama (RA) passed away, she thought in her heart who could be better than Abu Salama (RA). But she recited “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un,” and Allah Almighty gave her a better husband and a better household. That is, the Prophet ﷺ himself married her.
“The message of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 156-157 reminds believers to remain patient and trust Allah during every hardship.”
Allah’s Mercy Upon Those Who Are Patient
In the next verse, Allah Almighty says that those who remain patient, recite “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un,” and do not commit anything wrong or against the Shariah, upon them are blessings and mercy from their Lord.
Hakim-ul-Ummat Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (RA) says that Salawat refers to special mercies, while Rahmat refers to general mercies.
Shah Rafiuddin Muhaddith Dehlawi (RA) says that Salawat refers to those mercies that reached the servants through the Prophet ﷺ, while Rahmat refers to those mercies that Allah Almighty bestowed upon His servants directly.
And such people are rightly guided.
Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 156-157 also highlights the blessings and mercy of Allah upon those who remain patient.
Lessons from Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 156-157
The important lessons of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 156-157 help believers understand the wisdom behind hardships and patience.
From these verses, it is known that the hardships that befall Muslims are sometimes a means of raising their ranks and forgiving their sins.
Some misguided people object by asking why all the difficulties in the world come upon Muslims while disbelievers enjoy themselves and live in palaces.
The answer has become clear from the verses of the Holy Quran.
Similarly, Hazrat Umar (RA) says that once he went to the Prophet ﷺ while the Prophet ﷺ was resting on a mat. Marks of the mat had appeared on his blessed body. Seeing this, tears came to Hazrat Umar’s (RA) eyes.
The Prophet ﷺ asked the reason. He said that Rome and Persia were enjoying themselves while your condition is such that you do not even have a proper bed to spread over the mat.
The Prophet ﷺ said: Are you not pleased that for them there is only this world, while for us there is the Hereafter?
This means that the reward for the good deeds that disbelievers perform in this world is given to them in this world, while in the Hereafter they will be entered into Hell. The reward for our good deeds will be given to us in the Hereafter in the form of Paradise and the pleasure of Allah Almighty.
