Translation of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 177
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the East or the West, but righteousness is to believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets; to give wealth, despite loving it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveller, those who ask for help, and for freeing people from bondage; to establish prayer and give zakah; to fulfil their promises when they make them; and to remain patient in poverty, hardship, and during battle. Those are the people who are truthful, and those are the people who are mindful of Allah.

Tafseer of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 177
1. The True Meaning of Righteousness
When the direction of prayer was changed towards the Kaaba, some disbelievers and People of the Book raised objections about the change of the Qiblah. They argued about whether turning towards the East or the West was the correct practice.
Allah Almighty clarified in this verse that righteousness is not merely about the direction in which a person turns during prayer. Instead, Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 177 Tafseer explains that true goodness includes faith, sincere worship, generosity, fulfilling responsibilities, and patience.
2. Belief in Allah and the Articles of Faith
The verse begins by highlighting belief in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the revealed Book, and the prophets. These beliefs form the foundation of a Muslim’s life.
A believer should accept Allah’s guidance sincerely and believe in the messengers He sent. True faith is not simply a claim made with the tongue; it should influence a person’s decisions, behaviour, and relationship with others.
3. Spending Wealth to Help Others
Allah Almighty praises those who spend their wealth, despite their love for it, to help others. The verse identifies several groups who deserve support:
- Relatives who need assistance.
- Orphans who require care and protection.
- Poor and needy people.
- Travellers who face difficulties.
- People who ask for help.
- Those who need assistance in gaining freedom from bondage.
This teaching reminds Muslims that wealth is a responsibility and should be used to help those in need. Charity should be offered sincerely to please Allah, rather than merely to gain praise or recognition from people.
4. Establishing Prayer and Giving Zakah
Another important quality mentioned in the verse is establishing prayer and giving zakah. Prayer strengthens a person’s relationship with Allah, while zakah purifies wealth and supports eligible recipients.
According to this Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 177 Tafseer, genuine righteousness requires both belief and practical obedience. Muslims should fulfil their religious duties sincerely and consistently.
5. Fulfilling Promises and Keeping Commitments
Allah Almighty praises those who fulfil their promises when they make them. Keeping commitments is an essential part of good character and an important sign of honesty.
A Muslim should honour agreements, respect other people’s rights, and avoid breaking promises without a valid reason. Trustworthiness strengthens families, friendships, and communities.
6. Practising Patience During Hardship
The verse also describes the righteous as those who remain patient during poverty, suffering, difficulties, and times of conflict.
Patience does not mean abandoning effort. Rather, it means remaining steadfast, continuing to do what is right, and trusting Allah during difficult circumstances.
A believer should not abandon faith or become ungrateful simply because life becomes challenging. Patience, accompanied by sincere effort and reliance upon Allah, is an important quality of a righteous person.
7. The Qualities of Truly Righteous People
At the end of the verse, Allah Almighty declares that those who possess these qualities are truthful and mindful of Him.
The Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 177 Tafseer teaches that righteousness combines correct belief with good deeds. A truly righteous person believes sincerely, helps others, fulfils obligations, keeps promises, and remains patient during hardship.

Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 177 Tafseer
Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 177 Tafseer
Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 177 Tafseer
