Hiding Knowledge in Islam – Quranic Warning
The Quran strongly warns against Hiding Knowledge in Islam, especially when a person conceals clear signs and guidance that Allah has revealed for the benefit and guidance of people.
Allah Almighty says that those who hide the clear proofs and guidance after they have been made clear for people in the Book are under a severe warning. Allah condemns them, and those who invoke condemnation also condemn them.
However, Allah also mentions an important exception: those who sincerely repent, correct their actions, and make the truth clear to others will have their repentance accepted. Allah is Most Merciful and accepts repentance.

Tafsir and Context
Allamah Wahidi, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned in his book Asbab al-Nuzul that this verse was revealed concerning the People of the Book who concealed the verse regarding stoning and also concealed the qualities of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that were mentioned in the Torah.
The verse explains the seriousness of concealing divine guidance and truth from people.
The word La’nah (لعنت) means being distanced from Allah’s mercy. Therefore, the warning means that such people are deprived of Allah’s mercy. The explanation also mentions that those who condemn wrongdoing may invoke against such people.
This shows the seriousness of Hiding Knowledge in Islam, particularly when the knowledge is necessary for people’s guidance and benefit.
The Warning Against Concealing Beneficial Knowledge
Islam places great responsibility on people who possess beneficial knowledge. Knowledge that can guide and benefit others should not be deliberately hidden without a valid reason.
A hadith also contains a severe warning regarding concealing knowledge that benefits people. Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه is reported to have emphasized the importance of conveying knowledge in light of the Quranic warnings against concealing it.
The lesson of Hiding Knowledge in Islam is not simply that every piece of information must be shared with everyone. Rather, it teaches Muslims to fulfill the responsibility of conveying authentic beneficial knowledge appropriately and responsibly.
Repentance and Correction
The next verse gives hope to those who previously concealed the truth but sincerely repent and reform themselves.
Their repentance includes:
- Sincerely turning back to Allah.
- Correcting their actions.
- Making the truth clear to people.
- Making a firm intention not to conceal the truth in the future.
- Trying to guide those who may have been affected by their previous actions.
Allah promises to accept the repentance of such people and not deprive them of His mercy.
This teaches us that although Hiding Knowledge in Islam is a serious matter, the door of sincere repentance remains open.
Hiding Knowledge in Islam – Important Lessons
These verses teach Muslims that the knowledge and guidance given by Allah should not be deliberately concealed for personal benefit, worldly interests, or other unjust reasons.
At the same time, religious knowledge must be shared with wisdom, accuracy, and responsibility. A person should never attribute something to Allah or the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ without authentic knowledge.
The discussion of Hiding Knowledge in Islam therefore teaches us three important principles: respect for beneficial knowledge, responsibility in conveying truth, and sincere repentance when a person makes a mistake.
Conclusion
The Quranic warning about Hiding Knowledge in Islam reminds us that concealing truth and guidance is a serious responsibility. However, Allah’s mercy remains open for those who sincerely repent, reform themselves, and begin making the truth clear.
We should seek authentic knowledge from the Quran and Sunnah, act upon it, and share beneficial knowledge with others in a wise and responsible manner.
Hiding Knowledge in Islam – Quranic Warning
Hiding Knowledge in Islam
Hiding Knowledge in Islam – Important Lesson
Hiding Knowledge in Islam
