Change of Qibla in Islam – English Translation
Soon the foolish people will say, “What has turned them away from their Qiblah which they used to face?” Say, “To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to the Straight Path.”
Change of Qibla in Islam –
Change of Qibla in Islam – English Tafseer
When the first revelation came to the Prophet ﷺ, at the same time Hazrat Jibreel علیہ السلام taught him the method of prayer and ablution. At that time, there were two prayers, namely Fajr and Asr. The Prophet ﷺ used to offer these two prayers from the beginning. Then, on the night of Mi’raj, five prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet ﷺ and the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ.
In the beginning, the Qiblah of the Muslims was Baitullah. The Prophet ﷺ used to offer prayer facing it. The literal meaning of the word Qiblah is the place towards which one turns one’s face, meaning the place towards which Muslims turn their faces during prayer.
Then, when the Prophet ﷺ migrated to Madinah Munawwarah, he was commanded to face Bait-ul-Maqdis during prayer and make it his Qiblah. After some time, the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to once again make Baitullah his Qiblah.
The reason for this repeated change was that in the Torah, one of the names of the Prophet ﷺ is also mentioned as Nabi-ul-Qiblatain, meaning that the Prophet ﷺ would offer prayer facing both Qiblahs.
If the Prophet ﷺ had not been commanded to make this change, the Jews would have objected to him, saying that he was not the final Prophet because their books had stated that the Qiblah of the final Prophet would first be Baitullah, then Bait-ul-Maqdis, and then he would again be commanded to face Baitullah.
To remove this objection of the Jews, the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to make this Change of Qibla in Islam.
It is mentioned in narrations that there is a mosque of the Banu Salamah tribe near Madinah Munawwarah. The Prophet ﷺ was leading the Zuhr prayer there. He offered the first two rak’ahs facing Bait-ul-Maqdis. Then Hazrat Jibreel علیہ السلام came with revelation from Allah that now your Qiblah is Baitullah. Therefore, the Prophet ﷺ turned towards the Qiblah during the prayer itself, and the Companions رضی اللہ عنہم also turned towards Baitullah along with him.
This mosque is called Masjid al-Qiblatain. Even today, there is a sign of this turning in its prayer niche.
In any case, when the Muslims were commanded to change the Qiblah, the Jews and the polytheists started raising different kinds of objections.
For example, the Jews started saying that, God forbid, this person is confused and has no religion. Sometimes he faces one direction during prayer and sometimes another direction.
The polytheists of Makkah started saying that the Muslims face our Qiblah during prayer but oppose us in religion.
Allah Almighty tells His Prophet ﷺ to say in response to their objections that the east and the west belong to Allah. He is the Owner of all these places.
Now it is Allah’s will which direction He commands us to face during prayer. These places themselves have no special importance. The real thing is obedience to the command of Allah.
When Allah commands us to face the east, we will face the east. And when Allah commands us to face the west, we will face the west.
Allah Almighty commanded all Muslims to face Baitullah so that unity and agreement may be created among them.
If Allah Almighty had not specified a Qiblah, everyone would have prayed facing whichever direction they desired. In this way, unity and agreement could not have been established among the Muslims.
Allah Almighty guides towards the Straight Path whoever He wants to guide. You have no authority over this. And it is stated in the Holy Quran that Allah Almighty guides the person who turns towards Allah and repents.

Change of Qibla in Islam –
Change of Qibla in Islam
