Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150 Translation
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148 Translation
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150 provides important guidance about the change of Qibla and obedience to Allah.
And for every nation there was a direction to which it turned its face. So compete with one another in good deeds. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you all together. Surely, Allah is capable of all things.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 149 Translation
And from wherever you go out, turn your face towards Al-Masjid Al-Haram. Indeed, it is the truth from your Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 150 Translation
And from wherever you go out, turn your face towards Al-Masjid Al-Haram, and wherever you may be, turn your faces towards it, so that the people may have no argument against you, except those among them who are unjust. So do not fear them, but fear Me, and so that I may complete My favor upon you, and perhaps you may be guided.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150 Tafseer
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150 Tafseer explains the background of the Qibla and the prayers of the Prophet ﷺ.
The issue of the Qibla has already been discussed in detail. The Prophet ﷺ used to pray with ablution from the very beginning of revelation. It is narrated that when the first revelation came to the Prophet ﷺ in the Cave of Hira, Angel Jibreel (peace be upon him) struck the top of Mount Noor with his wing, causing a spring to emerge there. From this spring, Angel Jibreel (peace be upon him) taught the Prophet ﷺ how to perform ablution. Today, the Arab government has covered that place with white lime as a sign that there was once a spring there.
In any case, after that, during Laylat al-Mi’raj in the eleventh year of Prophethood, five daily prayers were made obligatory. After this, as long as the Prophet ﷺ remained in Makkah, he prayed facing the Kaaba. When he migrated to Madinah, he was commanded to pray facing Masjid al-Aqsa. For 16 or 17 months, he prayed facing Masjid al-Aqsa, but he had a heartfelt desire that the Kaaba should be made the Qibla of the Muslims because the Qibla of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was the Kaaba.
The Arabs also considered themselves to be upon the religion of Ibrahim, so there was greater hope that they would accept guidance compared with the Jews and Christians, because the Jews and Christians rejected the truth due to stubbornness and hostility, and there is no possible remedy for stubbornness, whereas the people of Makkah rejected the truth due to ignorance.
It should be remembered that when Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) built Masjid al-Haram, Prophet Yaqub (peace be upon him) built Masjid al-Aqsa 40 years later. After that, Masjid al-Aqsa was expanded during the time of Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him). When the time of Prophet Sulaiman (peace be upon him) came, he rebuilt Masjid al-Aqsa in a royal manner.
Allah Almighty says that every nation had a Qibla towards which it turned its face for prayer. In the same way, Allah Almighty made the Kaaba the Qibla for the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ. There is no objection to this.
Allah Almighty further says that wherever you may be, whether in the east or west, north or south, Allah Almighty will surely bring all of you to the gathering place on the Day of Judgment for accountability and reckoning. You will all have to receive the reward or punishment for good and evil. Therefore, do not think that we will not be raised again after death, as the polytheists of Makkah used to say that when we die and become dust, who will bring us back to life?
Bringing you back to life and gathering you in the field of resurrection is not difficult for Allah because Allah Almighty is capable of everything. The One who was capable of creating you the first time is also capable of creating you again.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150 and the Change of Qibla
In the next verse, Allah Almighty says: O Prophet, when you leave your home, turn your face towards Al-Masjid Al-Haram. This command regarding the change of Qibla is the truth from your Lord, and Allah Almighty is not unaware of your deeds.
This was the first abrogation in Islam, and when something new comes into existence, people are greatly surprised by it. Then, gradually, that surprise disappears.
In any case, for emphasis, Allah Almighty again says that when you leave your homes and the time for prayer comes, turn your faces towards the Kaaba so that the people may have no argument against you.
It was written in the earlier scriptures that the final Prophet would be the Prophet of the two Qiblas, meaning that his Qibla would first be Bayt al-Maqdis and later he would be commanded to make the Kaaba his Qibla.
If the command to change the Qibla had not been given, the People of the Book would have objected that it was written in their scriptures that the Qibla of the final Prophet would be the Kaaba, but your Qibla is not the Kaaba, so you are not the final Prophet.
Similarly, the polytheists of Makkah would object that the Prophet ﷺ claimed to follow the religion of Ibrahim, but he differed from him regarding the Qibla because the Qibla of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was the Kaaba while the Qibla of the Muslims was Bayt al-Maqdis.
Allah Almighty commanded the change of Qibla and thereby removed all these objections. As for those who are unjust, meaning those whose very purpose is to raise objections, there is no remedy for such people.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150 and Allah’s Favor
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150 also highlights Allah’s favor upon the Muslim Ummah.
Allah commanded the change of Qibla so that He might complete His favor upon you: He gave you the greatest Prophet, the greatest Book, and the greatest Qibla.
For this reason, it is narrated regarding Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) that when he read about the excellence of the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ, he prayed to Allah Almighty: “O Allah, Your Books contain the information that the Ummah of the final Prophet will be the best Ummah. Raise me also among this Ummah.”
The prayer of Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) was accepted, and Allah Almighty raised him alive to the heavens. Near the Day of Judgment, he will descend from the heavens and will remain alive for 40 years. He will follow the Shariah of the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ, pray facing the Kaaba, and follow the guidance of Islam.
Allah commanded the change of Qibla so that you may come upon the straight path.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150
Surah Baqarah Ayat 148-150
