Translation
And when We appointed for Musa (Moses) forty nights, then you took the calf for worship after him while you were wrongdoers. Then We forgave you after that so that you might be grateful. And when We gave Musa the Book and the Criterion (to distinguish between truth and falsehood), so that you might be guided.

Prophet Musa (AS) prayed to Allah. Allah commanded him to come to Mount Tur and spend forty nights in worship. After this period, Allah would grant him the divine Book.
While Musa (AS) was away, a man from Bani Israel named Samiri collected jewelry and fashioned a calf from it. He then placed soil that he had taken from the footprint of Angel Jibril (AS) into the calf. By Allah’s will, certain signs appeared in it, and it began to produce sounds like an animal.
Samiri deceived the people by claiming that the calf was their god. Many among Bani Israel followed him and began worshipping the calf.
When Musa (AS) returned from Mount Tur with the Torah, he saw his people engaged in calf worship. He initially became upset with Harun (AS) and asked why he had not prevented them.
Harun (AS) explained that he had repeatedly advised and warned them, but they refused to listen.
Despite this great wrongdoing, Allah accepted their repentance and forgave them so that they might become grateful for His blessings.
Allah also granted Musa (AS) the Torah and clear signs that distinguished truth from falsehood, enabling the people to follow guidance, remain on the straight path, and avoid misguidance.
