Translation of the Verses

Arabic

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوا أَتَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَن يُفْسِدُ فِيهَا وَيَسْفِكُ الدِّمَاءَ ۖ وَنَحْنُ نُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ وَنُقَدِّسُ لَكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

Urdu Translation

اور جب کہا تیرے رب نے فرشتوں کو بے شک میں زمین میں خلیفہ بنانے والا ہوں۔ انہوں نے کہا کیا آپ بنائیں گے زمین میں اس شخص کو جو اس میں فساد کرے گا اور خون بہائے گا، جبکہ ہم تیری حمد کے ساتھ تسبیح کرتے ہیں اور تیری پاکی بیان کرتے ہیں۔ اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا: بے شک میں جانتا ہوں ان چیزوں کو جو تم نہیں جانتے۔

English Translation

And when your Lord said to the angels: “Indeed, I am going to place a vicegerent on earth.” They said: “Will You place therein someone who will spread corruption and shed blood, while we glorify You with Your praise and declare Your holiness?” Allah said: “Surely, I know what you do not know.”

Tafseer

سورۃ البقرہ کی آیت نمبر 27 میں اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا کہ جس نے تمہیں پیدا کیا وہی عبادت کا مستحق ہے، پھر آیت نمبر 28 میں انسان کے کفر پر تعجب کا اظہار کیا گیا۔ اب ان آیات میں انسان کی پیدائش کا مکمل واقعہ ذکر کیا جا رہا ہے۔

In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 27, Allah Almighty states that the One who created you is the only One worthy of worship. Then in verse 28, amazement is expressed over the disbelief of mankind. Now in these verses, the complete incident of the creation of human beings is being mentioned.

خلیفہ سے مراد

Meaning of Khalifah

آیت میں خلیفہ سے مراد انسان ہے، اور انسان کے خلیفہ ہونے کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ اللہ تعالیٰ کے احکام پر خود بھی عمل کرے اور اپنی طاقت کے مطابق دوسروں سے بھی عمل کروانے کی کوشش کرے۔

The word Khalifah in this verse refers to mankind. Being a Khalifah means that a person should act upon the commands of Allah himself and also try, according to his ability, to encourage others to follow them.

فرشتوں کے سوال کی حکمت

Wisdom Behind the Angels’ Question

فرشتوں کے سوال کا منشا اللہ تعالیٰ پر کوئی اعتراض کرنا نہیں تھا بلکہ اس بات پر حیرت کا اظہار کرنا تھا کہ ایسی مخلوق کو پیدا کرنے میں کیا حکمت ہے جس میں نیکی کے ساتھ ساتھ برائی کرنے کی بھی صلاحیت ہوگی۔

The angels were not objecting to Allah’s decision. Rather, they were expressing wonder about the wisdom behind creating a being that would possess the ability to do both good and evil.

جنات کا ذکر

Mention of the Jinn Before Humans

مفسرین نے یہ بھی فرمایا ہے کہ انسان سے پہلے زمین پر جنات رہتے تھے اور وہ آپس میں ہر وقت لڑتے جھگڑتے رہتے تھے۔ انہوں نے آپس میں لڑ لڑ کر اپنے آپ کو ختم کر ڈالا تھا، اس لیے فرشتوں نے سوچا کہ شاید انسان کا بھی یہی انجام ہوگا۔

Some commentators have also stated that before mankind, the Jinn lived on earth. They constantly fought among themselves and eventually destroyed one another through their conflicts. Therefore, the angels thought that humans might meet the same fate.

Conclusion

ان آیات میں اللہ تعالیٰ نے انسان کی عظمت، اس کی ذمہ داری اور اپنی حکمت کو بیان فرمایا ہے۔ انسان کو زمین میں خلیفہ بنا کر اسے عبادت، اطاعت اور نیکی پھیلانے کی ذمہ داری دی گئی۔ یہ آیات ہمیں اللہ تعالیٰ کی حکمت کو سمجھنے اور اپنی زندگی کو اس کی رضا کے مطابق گزارنے کا درس دیتی ہیں۔

In these verses, Allah Almighty explains the honor of mankind, his responsibilities, and His divine wisdom. Humans were made vicegerents on earth and given the duty of worship, obedience, and spreading goodness. These verses teach us to understand Allah’s wisdom and live our lives according to His pleasure.
