Surah Baqarah Ayat 118-119 – English Translation
Translation of Verses 118-119
Verse 118:
And those who have no knowledge say, “Why does Allah not speak to us directly, or why does a sign not come to us?” Likewise, those before them said the same thing. Their hearts are alike. Indeed, We have made the signs clear for those who have firm faith.
Verse 119:
Indeed, We have sent you with the truth as a bearer of good news and a warner, and you will not be questioned about the people of Hell.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 118-119 – English Tafseer
These verses mention one of the negative characteristics of the disbelievers. They demanded that Allah should speak to them directly or that a special sign should come to them confirming the prophethood and message of the Prophet ﷺ.
They questioned why Allah had sent a messenger instead of speaking to them directly. They also demanded particular signs according to their own wishes.
The Demands of the Disbelievers
This attitude was not new. Earlier nations had also made similar demands from their prophets. Allah explains that their hearts had become alike because their attitude toward the truth was similar.
Instead of accepting the clear message brought by the prophets, they continued demanding extraordinary signs according to their own conditions.
The Quran teaches us that guidance is not dependent upon satisfying every demand of those who reject the truth. Allah has already provided many signs and proofs for those who sincerely seek the truth.
The Importance of Faith in the Unseen
One of the important lessons from Surah Baqarah Ayat 118-119 is the importance of believing in the unseen.
Faith is an examination. A person believes in Allah, His angels, the Hereafter, and His promises even though these realities cannot be seen with ordinary human sight in this worldly life.
If everything were made visible to everyone before they believed, the test of faith would lose its meaning. True faith includes believing in what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have informed us about the unseen.
Allah’s Signs Are Clear
Allah states that His signs have been made clear for those who have certainty and faith. The Quran contains many signs, proofs, warnings, lessons, and reminders.
However, people benefit from these signs according to the condition of their hearts. A sincere believer reflects upon the signs of Allah and becomes stronger in faith, while a person who insists on denial may continue rejecting even after seeing evidence.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 118-119 – The Mission of the Prophet ﷺ
In the next verse, Allah تعالیٰ comforts the Prophet ﷺ and explains his responsibility.
Allah says that the Prophet ﷺ was sent with the truth as:
- A bearer of good news
- A warner
- A messenger conveying Allah’s message
The Prophet ﷺ was responsible for conveying the message of Allah clearly. He was not responsible for forcing every person to believe.
This teaches us that guidance ultimately belongs to Allah. The duty of the prophets is to convey the message, give glad tidings to the believers, and warn those who reject the truth.
Lessons from Surah Baqarah Ayat 118-119
1. Avoid unnecessary demands
A believer should not approach religion with unnecessary demands and conditions. The correct attitude is to accept the truth when it becomes clear.
2. Believe in the unseen
Faith in the unseen is an essential part of Islamic belief. A believer trusts Allah and His Messenger ﷺ even when every reality cannot be seen physically.
3. Allah’s signs are everywhere
The Quran, creation, life, death, the universe, and many other realities contain signs that lead a sincere person toward recognition of Allah.
4. The prophets convey the message
The responsibility of the prophets is to convey Allah’s message, give good news to believers, and warn people against disbelief and disobedience.
5. Guidance belongs to Allah
These verses also teach that no prophet can force guidance into someone’s heart. Guidance is ultimately granted by Allah.
Conclusion – Surah Baqarah Ayat 118-119
Surah Baqarah Ayat 118-119 teaches us an important lesson about faith, guidance, and the attitude of those who reject the truth. The disbelievers demanded that Allah speak to them directly or send specific signs according to their wishes. Allah explains that similar demands were made by earlier nations as well.
The verses remind us that Allah has already provided clear signs for those who sincerely believe. True faith requires belief in the unseen and sincere acceptance of the truth brought by the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ was sent as a bearer of good news and a warner. His responsibility was to convey the message, while guidance ultimately belongs to Allah.
May Allah تعالیٰ give us sincere faith, understanding of the Quran, and the ability to follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Ameen.
