And to Allah belong the east and the west. So wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 115 and the Ease of Islam
Surah Baqarah Ayat 115
English Tafsir of Surah Baqarah Ayat 115
Surah Baqarah Ayat 115 explains an important principle concerning the direction of prayer and the authority of Allah’s command.
The Jews and Christians differed over several matters, including the direction of the Qiblah. The Jews faced one direction of Bayt al-Maqdis, while the Christians faced another. The polytheists of Makkah considered the Ka’bah to be their direction of worship.
When prayer was first made obligatory upon the Muslims, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was in Makkah. Since the Ka’bah was already the direction of the people of Makkah, the Muslims initially prayed towards the Ka’bah.
The Jews objected to this and argued that the prophets had faced Bayt al-Maqdis. Later, Allah commanded the Muslims to face Bayt al-Maqdis. The Jews were pleased with this change and considered it a confirmation of their argument.
After some time, Allah commanded the Muslims to turn towards the Ka’bah again. This change of Qiblah is discussed in detail in the second part of the Qur’an.
The East and the West Belong to Allah
The central message of Surah Baqarah Ayat 115 is that both the east and the west belong to Allah.
A particular direction does not possess holiness by itself. The direction becomes sacred for Muslims because Allah has commanded them to face it during prayer.
Therefore, the importance of the Qiblah comes from Allah’s command, not from the direction itself.
The verse teaches that Allah is not limited by any direction. His knowledge, power and authority encompass everything.
Lessons from Surah Baqarah Ayat 115
Surah Baqarah Ayat 115 gives us several important lessons:
- Allah is the Owner of every direction.
- The Qiblah is determined by Allah’s command.
- Islam provides ease when a person genuinely faces difficulty.
- Allah knows what is best for His servants.
- The commands of Allah are based on perfect wisdom and knowledge.
- A Muslim should follow Allah’s command instead of arguing over directions and appearances.
- Allah’s knowledge encompasses everything.
A Beautiful Message from Surah Baqarah Ayat 115
The verse reminds us that Allah’s knowledge and power are not restricted by our physical limitations. We may see different directions, places and circumstances, but Allah knows everything completely.
The Qiblah teaches Muslims unity and obedience. When Allah commands His servants to face a particular direction, they follow that command with submission and faith.
This is one of the beautiful lessons we can learn from Surah Baqarah Ayat 115.
Conclusion
Surah Baqarah Ayat 115 teaches us that the east and west belong to Allah and that Allah is All-Encompassing and All-Knowing.
The direction of prayer is important because Allah has commanded Muslims to face it. The true purpose is obedience to Allah and submission to His command.
May Allah help us understand the Qur’an, follow its guidance and keep our hearts connected to Him. Ameen.
