Surah Baqarah Ayat 114 – English Translation
And who is more unjust than the one who prevents the name of Allah from being mentioned in His mosques and strives to destroy them? Such people have no right to enter them except in fear. For them is disgrace in this world, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 114 – Tafseer in English
This verse highlights one of the greatest forms of injustice: preventing people from remembering Allah in His places of worship and attempting to destroy or cause them to become deserted.
The Jews, Christians, and the polytheists of Arabia made claims about being beloved by Allah, as mentioned in the previous verses. However, their actions sometimes contradicted these claims. They prevented people from worshipping Allah and tried to stop the remembrance of Allah in places dedicated to worship.
Throughout history, there have been incidents in which different groups attacked or destroyed the places of worship of others. Before the blessed birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Abraha, the Christian ruler of Yemen, marched towards the Ka’bah with an army of elephants intending to destroy the House of Allah. Allah protected His Sacred House and destroyed the army, an event mentioned in Surah Al-Fil.
Similarly, the polytheists of Makkah prevented Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his Companions from entering the Ka’bah, worshipping there, and remembering Allah. They also caused great hardship to the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims.
The Ka’bah was built by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) عليه السلام. Therefore, the claim of being connected to Allah cannot be justified while simultaneously trying to prevent people from worshipping Him.
A Major Lesson from Surah Baqarah Ayat 114
The verse teaches that preventing people from Allah’s mosques and attempting to make them deserted is a serious form of ظلم (injustice). A place dedicated to the worship and remembrance of Allah should be respected and protected.
Islam also teaches Muslims not to attack places of worship unjustly. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sent Muslims for military expeditions, he instructed them not to attack people who devoted themselves to worship in their places of worship and not to destroy religious buildings without justification. The command was to fight those who were actually fighting them.
Before the blessed birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Abraha marched towards the Ka’bah with an army of elephants intending to destroy the House of Allah. This event is mentioned in Surah Al-Fil.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 114 – Meaning of “Entering in Fear”
The scholars of Tafseer have mentioned two meanings regarding the statement that they should not enter the mosques except in fear.
1. Entering with Fear of Allah
The first meaning is that people should enter places of worship with humility, reverence, and fear of Allah. When a believer enters a mosque, the heart should be filled with خشیت (khushu and reverence), not arrogance or hostility.
Those who attempt to destroy or empty the mosques behave in the opposite way.
2. Entering in Fear of the Believers
Another interpretation is that those who tried to destroy Allah’s houses would eventually enter them in a state of fear.
This can be understood as an indication that the power of those who opposed the worship of Allah would eventually come to an end. After the conquest of Makkah, the polytheists experienced this reality. Likewise, when Jerusalem was conquered during the caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab رضي الله عنه, the situation changed significantly.
Thus, the verse contains a warning that oppression and attempts to prevent the worship of Allah cannot continue forever.
Surah Baqarah Ayat 114 –
