ترجمہ
اور ہرگز وہ اس کی تمنا نہیں کریں گے کبھی بھی ان اعمال کی وجہ سے جو ان کے ہاتھوں نے آگے بھیجے۔ اللہ تعالیٰ ظالموں کو خوب جاننے والے ہیں۔
اور البتہ تحقیق ضرور آپ ان کو پائیں گے کہ لوگوں میں سے سب سے زیادہ حریص زندگی پر اور ان لوگوں سے جنہوں نے شرک کیا۔ تمنا کرتا ہے ان میں سے ہر ایک کہ کاش اسے ہزار سال عمر دے دی جائے، حالانکہ اس کو عذاب سے دور نہیں کر سکتی یہ بات کہ اسے عمر دے دی جائے۔ اور اللہ تعالیٰ دیکھنے والے ہیں ان اعمال کو جو وہ کرتے ہیں۔
تفسیر
پچھلی آیات میں گزرا کہ یہودی کہتے ہیں کہ جنت میں صرف ہم داخل ہوں گے کیونکہ ہم اللہ تعالیٰ کے محبوب ہیں اور انبیاء بنی اسرائیل کی اولاد ہیں۔
تو اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا اگر تم اس دعوے میں سچے ہو تو موت کی تمنا کرو کیونکہ تمہارے اور جنت کے درمیان صرف موت حائل ہے، اس لیے تم اللہ تعالیٰ سے دعا مانگو کہ اے اللہ ہمیں جلدی موت دے تاکہ ہم جلدی جنت میں داخل ہو سکیں۔
پھر اللہ تعالیٰ پیشگی فرماتے ہیں کہ وہ یہودی موت کی تمنا کبھی نہیں کریں گے کیونکہ انہیں یہ بات اچھی طرح معلوم ہے کہ ہم نے جو برے اعمال کیے ہوئے ہیں ان کی سزا ہمیں ضرور دی جائے گی۔
اگلی آیت میں اللہ تعالیٰ فرماتے ہیں کہ یہودی تمام لوگوں سے اور مشرکین سے زیادہ زندگی پر حریص ہیں کیونکہ مشرکین تو قیامت کے منکر ہیں اور یہودی اور عیسائی قیامت کے قائل ہیں اور انہیں اپنے ایمان کا بھی پتہ ہے اور اس کے بدلے اور اس کی سزا کا بھی علم ہے۔
اس لیے وہ کہتے تھے کہ اس دنیا میں جو کھانا چاہتے ہو اور جو مزے کرنا چاہتے ہو وہ مزے کر لو اور خوب کھا پی لو۔
اس لیے ان میں سے ہر شخص یہ تمنا کرتا ہے کہ وہ ہزار سال زندہ رہے تاکہ زیادہ سے زیادہ دنیاوی نعمتوں سے لطف اندوز ہو سکے۔
لیکن لمبی عمر کا مل جانا اللہ کے عذاب سے نہیں بچا سکتا، جیسے کہ ابلیس لعین ہزاروں سال سے زندہ ہے لیکن جب وہ مرے گا تو فوراً اسے جہنم میں داخل کر دیا جائے گا۔
اور اللہ تعالیٰ ان کے اعمال کو دیکھ رہے ہیں، ان کے اعمال کے مطابق انہیں ضرور بدلہ دیں گے۔

Translation
They will never wish for it (death) because of what their own hands have sent ahead. Allah is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.
Indeed, you will surely find them the greediest of all people for life, even more than those who associate partners with Allah. Every one of them wishes that he could be granted a life of one thousand years, but being granted such a long life will not remove him from the punishment. Allah is Ever-Seeing of all that they do.

In the previous verses, it was mentioned that the Jews claimed that only they would enter Paradise because they were the beloved people of Allah and the descendants of the Prophets of the Children of Israel.
Allah Almighty replied that if they were truthful in this claim, they should wish for death, because death is the only barrier between them and Paradise. Therefore, they should pray to Allah to grant them death quickly so that they could enter Paradise sooner.
However, Allah informed beforehand that the Jews would never wish for death because they knew very well that they would certainly be punished for the evil deeds they had committed.
In the following verse, Allah states that the Jews are the greediest of all people for worldly life, even more than the polytheists. The polytheists denied the Hereafter, whereas the Jews and Christians believed in it. They were aware of their faith, the rewards, and the punishment awaiting them.
For this reason, they preferred to enjoy worldly pleasures as much as possible, eating and benefiting from the comforts of this life.
Each one of them wished to live for one thousand years so that they could enjoy worldly blessings for as long as possible.
However, a long life cannot save anyone from the punishment of Allah. Just as Iblis has lived for thousands of years, when his appointed time comes, he will immediately be cast into Hell.
Allah Almighty sees all of their deeds, and He will certainly recompense them according to what they have done.
